I walk into C's day care today and "the sign" is up. "The sign" has informed me of RSV, pink eye, and the like in the past.
*sigh*
On today's menu? Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease.
I ask the teacher what to look out for. Blisters, yada yada.
I go home to Dr. Google and find this on the CDC website: "Hand, foot, and mouth disease usually starts with a fever, poor appetite, a vague feeling of being unwell (malaise), and sore throat."
*sob*
I've had these symptoms for 2 days.
Here's hoping it's a fluke and blisters don't start showing up.
(& don't think I'm heartless, of course I wouldn't want my baby to get it either.)

I guess not. :/ We use the day care on base so they have a ton of regulations to follow and no shut down was noted on the info sheet or when I spoke directly with the teacher.

That was going around here a while back. Thankfully it wasn't big deal, we only got the blisters, that's the only way I knew anything was up. But now my hand is itching.

IJC will be 5 this year and this is honestly the first time in the last nearly 5 years that I've heard of anyone having it. Not just that, but there being "outbreaks" in lots of places.
It whipped through the CDC and a few in-home daycares on base here, the son of a friend got it. And you're about the 6th person I know to have either come in contact with it at their daycare or mention it. Crazy.

HFM is not a big deal at all. Most people know it as coxsackie, and its one of the things that when kids get it a lot of docs tell parents "its just a virus". Sounds way worse than it is. The worst part is the spiking temp. Otherwise, the blisters are just painful, and really rare can get an infection if they open and get bacteria in them. Nothing to ddo for it but ibuprofen.
Adults generally don't get it because we have all been exposed to it growing up. And everything starts with your symptoms

K got it last spring, so probably 14 or 15 months. She had the fever and throat blisters. Fevers spike high like 104-105. She refused to eat anything but fruit from the fridge (like cold grapes) and would only drink cold beverages (rather than a room temp bottle of water). Then she would drool like she was getting a mouthful of teeth (because it hurt to swallow). The first night she had the fever, we went to urgent care because tylenol and motrin weren't brining the temp down, but there was no other signs. Because of that we followed up with ped the next day (temp was still high but more reasonable) and the sores were there.
Roseola is also going around here too (another fever/rash virus). This is NY
YES! I actually commented in that ML thread the other night b/c I *thought* HFM was more serious if you were pregnant and she was being so flippant about it!
And, yikes, she's pregnant again! Teenagers. I digress...
TMI, my H and her H may be in the same camp. In my defense, I had NO CLUE last night that HFM or anything so painful *might* be behind why I'm feeling so lousy.

Poor baby. I hope I'm just overreacting and it's nothing. She's been dealing with enough with her ever draining tubes.

Sorry your having a rough time with the tubes, they were the best thing we ever did (@ 9 months). Just think, though, all that fluid would be in her ear (shutter)

I know! Yuck! How long did K drain for? We're on day 10 so they're switching her drops to something else.
She's been sleeping much better though so I think she has relief despite the excess drainage.

Maybe a week or two, I don't really remember too well (I was sleep deprived at that point from 9 months of waking up once an hour). I remember the worst part of the whole thing was getting the drops in her ears which I ultimately mastered.
One of her tubes fell out in the last 3 months. Every time she gets a fever we end up back at the peds because I figure it will only be a matter of time before she needs her next set.
I literally just got back from taking J to the dr and guess what he has?? HFM! Wahhhhhh
Noooo! What are his symptoms?
Starting yesterday afternoon, he woke up from his nap with a fever around 100.8. Pretty much from then on he was inconsolable. Crying, fussing and just laying around. I assumed it was his ears again (he's had a few infections and this is how he acted) so I made an appt this morning. A few hours after he woke up today I noticed a red bump on his hand. It wasn't there when he first woke up.
The dr looked at his ears and they were good. So then he looked at his throat and said it was very red and had a lot of bumps. He then checked his hands and feet and asked me about the bump on his hand. I told him it had literally just appeared this morning.
So far that is the only red bump. I really hope it doesn't get to bad. Of course I looked on the internet and saw a lot of pics of kids with blisters in their mouths, ouch.
I feel like everyone with kids the same age as ours has HFM. Kids are gahross!
You're still having issues with the tubes and the eyes and everything? Did the ENT have any more to say about it?
I was just telling my BFF how gross kids are.
Her eyes are better and the pedi put her on an antibiotic for "junky lungs" but the ears are still draining and were even draining a little pink yesterday which is why they agreed to switch the type of drops. Her follow up ENT is Tues so they'll check on the tubes then.
I think she feels better but the prolonged drainage worries me.

Understandably.
I can't believe it took you that long to get an ENT appointment...ridiculous!
What hospital did she have the surgery at? DuPont?

Yep. They were awesome. & everything is tiny/baby-sized which forces you to smile despite being anxious.
