How far in advance of your move did you deal with cancelling/changing your utilities?
Our contract says June 6 to close, but we're likely going to need another week b/c of the bank BEING SLOW, which is not a huge deal - the seller is agreeable.
I'm just wondering when I should call re: utilities - one we have a firm date of closing? We're planning to close on a Wednesday and planning to move that following weekend. Though part of me is wondering if we should just spread it out over 2 weekends since our rent is paid up through June.
Around here, it's about 2-3 days notice to have utilities set up. If the utilities are already on to the house, and it's just a matter of setting up the new account and transferring service to it, it can usually be done faster. I'd wait until you have a firm closing date.
I agree with PPs to wait until you have a firm date, but then go ahead and do it.
I waited until about 2 or 3 days beforehand to turn on the utilities, and at least one of them (I think the electric company) charged me an extra fee for the "short notice" turn-on.
And the internet company told me they just plain couldn't come out until a week later, so we were living here without internet a few days. Which was awful for us.
Whenever we move again, I'm scheduling that stuff well in advance!
Also, we did a staggered move like you're talking about, since our rental was flexible as to when we needed to be out and we were getting work done on the new house. For the most part, I really liked it, because we broke the moving into several days because I found moving exhausting. Unfortunately, it also gave us an excuse to not be as prepared as we could have been -- we were still packing crap in boxes, then driving half-empty cars over to the new house just because we needed a break from packing. It took a lot longer than if we'd packed ahead of time.
