we just closed on our first house yesterday and we're going to start moving this weekend...
do i REALLY need to put down contact paper or some other liner in my kitch cabinets?? my mom was always a stickler for putting it in every place we lived but it just looks like a PITA.
i know it's probably stupid but we've never owned a house and i want to make sure i don't do anything to mess up any part of it!
Most newer cabinets have a laminated type surface on the shleves that's easy to wipe clean. I think shelf liners were for old cabinets that didn't have that and were difficult to wipe clean.
No, you don't need to do it and you shouldn't. Someone posted a link on this board, I think, the other day about the glue attracting roaches and linked this article: nymag.com/guides/everything/pests/40649/
I have the foam kind in a couple of my cabinets where I store pots and pans and heavier little used appliances. I didn't want all that sliding around scratching my cabinets. Oh and my cupboard where I store the crystal servingware (just so stuff doesn't get chipped).
I didn't do all of them. I didn't see the need and my inside cabinets have that laminate stuff as well that just wipes up.
When we moved into our house, the cabinets were gross. I scrubbed them and then put in the foam liner - something about it made me feel like they were keeping my stuff off the dirtiness (but that's just me being weird). Then when we installed new cabinets, I didn't put in any type of liner.

Well, we installed expensive new cabinets a few years ago, and we never put contact paper down. I don't see why someone would, unless there is something sticky in there.
We just got a new kitchen and use LifeLiner (from Bed, Bath and Beyond to protect the wood -- basically from wet dishes or crumbs/leaks in the pantry. It took a lot of time but I'm glad I did it.

I put liners in our old nasty cabinets. It made things seem cleaner. With our new cabinets we didn't install anything. I might add cork to a few of my pot drawers, but we'll see.

Our house was never lived in when we moved in, but I still put down the foam ones. I think it makes it a lot quieter when you're putting dishes away, and protects the cabinets from dings, scratches, water, etc.
I like the foam kind that doesn't glue on. It wipes clean easily, comes out easily, and keeps the shelves from getting dinged/scratched up.
I do exactly this ^^^
If it were a brand new home (never lived in) I might not but I'm weird about other people and their cleanliness habits. I tend to wipe everything down with bleach too.
