We've had cats since were married eons ago, but since DS's beloved Himmie died last week, I've been considering a dog at some point.
DH and I both had dogs as kids. It's just the 3 of us- DH who is home most of the time, myself (I work from home) and our adult son who is a FT commuter student at a local college.
I am considering a pug, Boston or other smallish dog. I'm looking for personality, decent health and a companion. Any advice?

Flat-faced dogs like pugs and Boston terriers typically have more health problems -- their flat faces make it difficult for them to breathe.
My advice is to focus less on breed, and make a list of traits you're looking for -- how much exercise are you able to provide? Is yours an active family that goes on hikes and you want the dog to come along? How often do you want to deal with grooming (short-haired dogs can get away with a bath once a season, while long-haired dogs need to be groomed every 6-ish weeks). Do you want a dog that needs lots of mental stimulation, or a couch potato?
Then either talk to reputable breeders or take your list to shelters or rescues and let them suggest dogs that match what you're looking for.
Himalayans are brachecephalic as well and do have some breathing and eye issues. So, I'm pretty used to that. Ditto the grooming. I'm used to a daily combing and weekly baths, so that doesn't freak me out.
Not sure about the level of exercise, I walk 3 miles or so most days and would be willing to bring the dog along. I have a 3/4 acre lot so I would have room. Good things to think about.
I dont know what youre planning and I know it's a very personal decision and it's not for everyone, but can I ask that you don't immediately write off getting a shelter dog, please?
I know I'm biased because every animal I had growing up, and now, has been from a shelter. I've had nothing but luck with shelter animals. They've all had the sweetest temperament and to watch them "blossom" is nothing short of amazing. If you are wanting a pure breed or puppy there are lots of rescue groups that specialize in both.

Just something else to consider good luck!
I agree with this. Both our pets are from a rescue.
