Good suggestions. I am going to check out the Best Buy thing bc DH has one close to work. I've never heard of our county doing that, but I can investigate. And I forgot about Craigslist. Hopefully I can get this thing out of here in the next few days. Thank you!
I forgot that our county also has a recycling program. I have never used it because it is only certain months/days. Our Best Buy just has a cart that you set them on. So simple!
Um, I still have mine from 1998 sitting in my living room in NY. So, not entirely worthless. I used it to watch coverage of Hurricane Sandy when I was home last month.
No idea when we'll take the plunge and upgrade to a flat screen.
I don't think they're worthless. Try joining freecycle - things never last long on there. We only have one flat screen tv. I'm not upgrading the others until people stop giving us their old non-flat screens!

I know at least one of the thrift stores near us also had a sign saying they wont take them any more. I'd offer it free on Craigslist or Freecycle. We also saw one in our neighborhood with a "free" sign on it, and we actually took it. It's hooked up in the basest in front of the elliptical.
I recently listed one (27 inch) for free on Craigslist, and put it on the curb with a Free sign. It was gone in around 2 hours, someone who responded to my Craigslist post came and took it.
I work at a homeless shelter thrift store, and we only take them if it comes with other donations. If someone rolls up and wants to drop off just a tv we give them the address of the local electronics recycling center. Save us the trip because that's probably where it's going anyway :-)
