So, I'm looking for some inexpensive, everyday dishes. I'd like them to be white, and to not burn the crap out of my hand if microwaved!
We currently have a set of dishes made by Espana (from Macy's), and if we microwave them, the dishes are scalding, and the food is still totally cold. I definitely don't want another set that does that...it's obnoxious.
We have the Everyday white dishes from Bed bath and beyond....love them. They look fancy but are cheap. We have microwaved the bowls for soup and they don't come out overly hot, unlike our last dishes so I know what you mean!
The very expensive set of everyday dishes I registered for did that hot/cold thing. Drove me insane! They also chipped like hell. I felt so bad that my guests had spent whatever per place setting and I used them less than 3 years. I ended up replacing them with some plain white dishes from WM. They didn't have a brand - they were part of the 2010 Christmas line-up (but they're completely plain), but my guess is they're Gibson or equivalent. MIL and I have both remarked how the cheap Gibson dishes from WM hold up better than the expensive everyday from department stores.
I bought mine a few years ago at Costco. They don't do the hot thing in the microwave unless I microwave for along time.....if I have a plate in there for 5 or 6 minutes on high power sort of thing.
They are Emiril Lagasse...I probably butchered that spelling. I noticed last time I was in though that they had another brand of restaurant style white dishes for a good price.

I have white fiestaware- it isn't the cheapest but it isn't that bad considering that they are lead-free, heavy heavy duty, and will last me a long time with their classic design.

+1
The longer I have my EDWs from BB&B, the more I appreciate their clean simple lines. You can dress them up with nicer flatware, linens and crystal and they look beautiful.

Everyday White ladies ... do you have problems with them chipping? Those are the dishes we registered for and I've completely stopped using them. They chip so easily and don't fit well into the dishwasher. Am I doing it wrong?
I've never chipped one. DS dropped and broke one once, but that's it.
No problem stacking in the dishwasher, but I have a deep tub style that fits most anything I put in it. Are they banging against each other in the dishwasher?

I have no idea, auntie. I never heard them moving at all, and yet there'd be mysterious chips everywhere. I stopped using them completely about 2 years ago. And yeah, the bowl depths just never worked for our dishwasher. Correlle was/is much more accommodating, I guess.
My Everyday White chip like crazy (especially the bowls) and the bowls do not stack well in my dishwasher--in the old one or the new one we just bought. I have to leave about two spaces between each bowl.
AFA heat, they are better than my last set but sometimes they get hot but the food doesn't. I notice it with the bowls more. WTH is it with those bowls?! lol

Another vote for correlle. I bought a set way back in college and have had several other "nicer" sets since then - including wedding dishes. The correlle are by far my favorites. They are not indestructible, though. Funny story - one day I discovered that DH was taking my nice glass bowls to work for lunch. We got into a big stupid fight and I screamed "Take the correlle bowls instead because they won't break!!" and slammed one down on the floor to illustrate my point. Shattered worse than crystal.

I like my Corelle. Winter white is what we have been getting. Super cheap and microwave well. They get hot but the food is hot so it is expected! And they are only hot where the food is touching
I am not sure how big your city is, but I highly recommend looking up a restaurant supply store! I buy almost all my dishes (except for thifted ones) at my local one. They are built to last and take a lot of heat. Plus they are cheap!
Corelle. My plates have to be in the microwave a very long time in order to get hot.
I was looking to buy new plates (i actually posted here) and almost got PB Great White on sale two weeks ago. PB has since increased the base price for dishes so their current sale is the regular price from 2 weeks ago.
Anyway, Target and Walmart put a Corelle Winter Frost 16-piece set for $18 this past weekend and I got them. We have used other Corelle dishes for years without problems. They are not fancy or as nice as the PB set but I can use our other china for when we have guests.
We have EDW from BBB. I like that I can go pick up an extra piece here or there with no issue. We registered for them and have been very, very pleased.
