Ditto PP. You can trade your old canister in at BB&B for $15. I also use the 20% coupons to buy new syrups. Macy's sometimes has good deals on the syrups and additional soda bottles, too, but I've only ever seen them online not in stores.
We have had our SS for 2.5 years, and we go through phases of using it a ton and then not very much. For us, it was an environmental decision so we're not tossing bottles and cans every time we drink a soda. But I also like it because I'm able to carbonate my soda as little or much as I like, and I like to mix syrups or make it more/less concentrated. It's also saved quite a bit of money and we're not even big soda drinkers, so you may see a pretty significant difference.
Also, the generic of Mt. Dew, I think it's called Fountain Mist or something like that, is disgusting. Ginger ale is my favorite.
I freaking love mine. I use it daily. But I just use it for sparkling water. The syrups are fine, but it's just not my thing. I agree that it prob won't replace a brand name cola habit.
I got tired of mine. We used it for awhile & eventually got out of habit. Mostly we drink diet coke & it's not the same. I liked the space/trash saving aspect most. Taste, cost & convenience were not the same. I keep it around but I'm not in love.
I use mine all the time for sparking water (mostly for cocktails)
Supposedly if you are handy you can refill the canisters yourself using dry ice. That sounds like a recipe for blowing stuff up to me, but people do it and there are tutorials.
I don't use mine as much as I thought I would. The flavors sorta suck. I have read that you can use the actual soda syrup like fountain machines use, so that might be a good investment.
I haven't had to refill my canister yet, but I'm afraid of how much hassle and money it will be.
My MIL got one for DH this year (at my suggestion). He really only drinks sparkling water, but does drink Coke every once in a while. We purchased Coke syrup from WS last year when we got a carbonation thingy (they recalled it, hence the need for SS). It's actually really good and DH agreed that it tasted enough like Coke that he would use it. So, maybe worth checking into if the SS syrups aren't great.
We used ours a ton the first 6 months or so that we had it. I don't think we have used it in a couple months. We always forget to pick up a new CO2 canister whenever we go out. I don't really like any of the soda flavors but some of the tea flavors and the natural ones are good.
We love ours and use it daily. We were going through a case and a half of seltzer a week, so the cost savings and reduction of waste were the reasons I purchased it. I don't like the soda syrups, but the my water flavorings are good. We get the large co canister and pay $30. The last one lasted almost five months.

I've filled mine up with dry ice three times, and I haven't blown anything up. It ends up being <$5 to fill up a tank. DH and I are geeks, so we kind of enjoy playing with the dry ice while we're filling it.
Love the soda stream... Use it almost every day. I like the flavors, but they're not the same as Coke or Pepsi.
