In lieu of buying each other Christmas gifts, DH and I are getting a new couch for our living room. Any thoughts on when the best time would be to buy? Before Christmas? After New Year's?
Traditionally furniture - especially living room/family room (which gets replaced more often) is more likely to be discounted most heavily in January and July. I have a friend who used to own an upscale independent furniture store- the new lines tend to come out late summer to capture the people who want to re-do prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas, so they clear space at shops and warehouses mid-summer. January clearence captures the buyer whose home looks a little worn after the holiday decor comes down as well as those planning to refresh their rooms in advance of the spring showers, weddings and graduation seasons. Even Ikea has thei big sales then.
Not sure what the chains do, but the real high end Stickley dealer near me has sales in the early fall.
Ditto what the others said. There are some good deals in January and don't quote me on this but I think Ethan Allen has a pretty good sale around that time as well.
