DS keeps getting his chubby knees stuck in the slats of his crib. I think he's trying to climb out, gets stuck, and starts screaming. Would you say it's time to take the front railing off of the crib?
We moved DS (somewhat) out of necessity at 20 mos. b/c DD was on the way. He transitioned easily at that age. He hadn't tried climbing out, etc., by that point, so I'm not much help there...he'd actually lay in bed until we'd come to get him in the AM: it took him probably 8 weeks to figure out he could climb out on his own!
Every kid is different -- i'd try it and if it's a fail, oh well, back to the crib he goes and then put in some bumpers or something? DD Is almost 2.5 and she LOVES her crib. We don't want to move her out yet until after our DS comes in a month. And even with that, we'll probably wait until after a month or 2. We don't really want to deal with her roaming the halls at night...
No. DD did that around 6 months of age, and we didn't transition to toddler bed until she was 2. We got breathable bumpers to keep her from poking her legs through.
We didn't go to a toddler bed until she climbed out of her crib.
I converted DD a few months before she turned 2. She wasn't trying to climb out and wasn't getting her legs stuck, but she was ready to be PT and I wanted her transitioned before I really started fully PT so she could get herself out of bed to go to the potty if she needed to (plus I didn't want 2 new life changes at the same time).

DS1 knows he can climb out, but he still waits for us to get him in the am.
DD is 2.5 and in a toddler bed, and still thinks she cant' get out herself, even though she climbs in and out at night herself. I think she thinks mom or dad need to be there. Its actually pretty great. lol.
She never climbed out of the crib entirely- she tried and would get "stuck" at the top. We moved her for other reasons-- she would throw a fit at night going in. Bedtime has been a dream since she's been in the bed. she goes right down.
