Has anyone "rebuilt" their fireplace? We have the typical huge 1960s brick fireplace in our family room, with the 6 row-deep brick hearth. I sure would love to reduce the footprint and size of the thing, not to mention the STYLE.
How much would this run us to have them remove the brick, put a flush hearth of marble on the floor in front, take away the mantle, and make the wall tiles or something?
I've attached a pic. Ignore all the toys. That's where we store them
We just bought a house where we need to encase the brick and put up a new surround and mantel (right now its just bricks floor to ceiling painted with white lead paint and the gas fireplace with brass door). For the labor and sheetrock to cover all the brick and to place a new mantel, surround and hearth was $450 from the contractor we are using, and $900 from the one we are not. That does not include the actual cost of the mantel and marble surround. We are probably going to order from mantelsdirect.com, and it seems like it will cost around $1200-2000 for a new mantel and marble surround from them, depending on what we choose.
