I was talking to a co-worker about how excited I am to hang my wreath on my front door (it's fresh and was made by a friend). I was planning on just using one of those over-the-door hooks and she said, "aren't you afraid it'll scratch your door?"
I wasn't before but am now! My front door is metal and isn't something I can just repaint if it were to scratch due to HOA and because it matches all the other doors in my building (I'm in a townhome). So, what is the likelihood of scratching my door and how do you hang your wreath?
It may minorly scratch it but no big deal. I usually have something on my door year round so it'll be covered anyway. A little paint will touch it right up .

Over the door hook.
If your door is metal, you may want to look into one of those heavy-duty magnet hooks. If you're worried about the front of the door, hang your wreath from a long ribbon and hook that ribbon over the top of the door to the magnet hook on the back side.
our metal door has a window so I use a suction hook. on our wood door I use a ribbon stapled to the top edge of the door. I don't think either of our doors can fit the over the door hanger.
I use an over the door wreath hanger every year. On a real wreath. I've never had a scratch in my door. I shove the wreath as tight/far back on the hanger as I can get it so it doesn't "swing" around and stays tight.
We have a wood door w/a glass window so I use a suction cup.
At our old house we had a metal painted door and I used an over the door hook but I just put little felt circles on all parts of it where it would touch the door so it didn't scratch it.
Lurker coming out! I had to respond to this because DH just made me hot glue felt to the back of our fresh wreath because he was afraid it would scratch the door. I think he's nuts, but I did it anyway because I had the felt. I just cut a long narrow strip and hot glued it to the metal wreath form. It does help dampen the noise when you open and close the door.

Metal hook over the door. Never thought about it scratching the door. I guess..... I can throw some of those felt stick on the bottom of chairs legs things on it. Also not sure if I care if it might scratch. LOL

This is the type of felt I use. I have a huge packet of various sizes for furniture legs from Target. I have some on the hanger itself because there is a spot a few inches from the top where trim juts out from the door and could make this is a "pressure point". Then I use some on the bottom of the wreath.
Unless you are in a really windy area where the wreath is constantly moving, I don't think you will have a problem.
