You probably need to download Overdrive assuming that's what your library uses. From there depending on the book you'll be able to listen on your computer, transfer to your phone/mp3 player, burn to cd etc.
You do need the overdrive app. I don't know about anybody else, but I can only listen to MP3 files on my iPad and phone. If I have to get the audio book in the WMA format I have to download it onto my desktop and transfer it to my iPod.

Yep, me too! I actually was looking into this the other day and I think that maybe Iphones can listen to any format of audiobook. But on my droid I can only listen to the MP3 version. Unfortunately, my library seems to mainly have WMA format so generally I download the audiobook to my desktop and transfer to my ipod. Which I really don't have any complaints about, I think using my phone all the time would probably run my battery down even more and some days I barely make it through the day with enough battery as it is!
