There seems to be a plague of stray dogs in my neighborhood recently. In the last month, FI and I have come across 3 stray dogs while we're out walking! One we couldn't figure out where he belonged and got him to follow us home while we called his owners who didn't pick up for hours. The other two had just gotten out of their yards and were running around near their houses, so we were able to just knock on a few doors before we found out where they belonged.
First of all, this drives home the point people often make on this board. Don't leave your dog outside unattended! You never know what they're up to. It makes me so angry how careless these people are- we live right near downtown buy some very busy roads!
Second, I bought a leash to keep in my car but now I think I need another one to take on walks. Does anyone keep supplies in their car or house for stray dogs? What kind of stuff should I get, since this seems to be happening all the time now?

A slide leash or one that could be used as such, a normal leash, treats, and a blanket for over the seat in case of mud, dirt since not all dogs let you wipe their paws. Just a side note, be careful of putting a dog in a car with you with no separator between you and the dog. Having worked in the dog world for years (pet sitting, grooming, ect), I have heard a few stories of people putting dogs in the car and then going to get in and the dog goes after the rescuer from either fear, claustrophobia, or even being territorial. I know its not advised, but depending on your plan, the animal control people around here suggested using 1 leash to make a harness (there are videos on youtube that show you how to do this) and another to secure the dog to the seat back so they cannot get to the driver, but are still not as at risk in the event of an accident as when using a leash tied to the neck.
