I cant believe we are already at Memorial Day Weekend. Okay, so obviously, I dint get to celebrate it but I just cant stop thinking about going to a nice BBQ.
So what do you love to eat at a picnic or BBQ?
I love corn on the cob and potato salad and hot dogs.
Oh man I LOVE this question! I love BBQs and picnics and since the weather got nicer I just keep thinking about it. There are so many BBQ foods I really enjoy: veggie burgers or fake dogs, potato, pasta and fruit salad, grilled tomatoes, baked potatoes. For picnics I love french bread with a cheese platter (mostly stinky cheeses ), a nice chilled wine, and fruit salad.
I love corn on the cob and potato salad and hot dogs.
I'm about to blow your mind: Potato salad on hot dogs! It sounds weird, but hot dogs kind of gag me now without it. This is how Norwegians eat their hot dogs (with ketchup, mustard and crispy fried onions) and it is seriously delicious!
My answer is American baked beans. I love them. I've come to realize that I also love British breakfast baked beans, also. I am a bean lover.
Popcorn you should try it. It's probably pretty similar and good. DH's grandma makes it and it looks nearly the same as what my grandma makes. Germans also love cheesy potato casserole.
lemonade, hot dogs, potato chips, and homemade ice cream
My family is vehemently anti-mayonnaise, so I never had non-lettuce-based salads growing up, and even though I (the black sheep) have nothing against mayo, I still have a hard time associating something like potato salad with a picnic or BBQ. I just never did that. Though sometimes mom made devilled eggs using mustard instead of mayo. That's pretty yum.
I love making wraps or really nice sandwiches for picnics, also some bread with hummus is always good, oh, and stinky cheeses, obviously. I usually add in some small 1 portion baggies of chips and some nice cupcakes-without-frosting (so usually a fancier cake that doesn't need it in cupcake liners) for dessert. I hardly ever go out to BBQ's, but when I do I often bring a nice marinated steak or a pasta salad. (Depends on if I'm supposed to bring stuff to share, or just something on the grill for myself - I've been to both kinds of bbqs.)
Honestly, mostly I just grill when the weather is nice out in my own yeard. And really, everything can and shall be grilled when the weather is nice enough! :-)
Potato & pasta salads (I like mine with pesto & mushrooms), garlic bread, tomato/mozzarella/basil & avocado/tomato/red onion/coriander salads are staples at our bbqs.
I also like to throw some courgettes brushed with olive oil & lemon juice on the grill for extra veg.
We also often steam some shrimp or calamari in a tinfoil bag with chili/garlic/white wine to vary from meat meat meat...

Inspired by this thread I went for a picnic in the park with my husband for dinner. We had french bread with all sorts of cheeses, potato salad, aioli, herb butter, chilled pinot gris, and some grapes. Awesome!
bugabean. why was your family against mayo? My parents go crazy with the mayo.
My mom thinks it's disgusting. She won't even LOOK at it. I'm not sure if the other members of the family just go along with it or if she's convinced them it's just the truth of the world or what. I was in college before I actually realized that I'd never even tasted it before. I actually thought that I hated it because everyone in the family talks about hating it so much, and then one day as I was about to complain that they put a bunch of mayonnaise in a little cup on my plate, I realized I had absolutely no idea what it tasted like. I dunked a fry in it and I was like, "that's it? whatever." Been a mayo eater ever since. And my mom SCORNS me for it. It's dumb, but I've come to expect these kinds of things from my fam.

My biggest hit at GTGs and BBQs is when I take cheese croquettes. They are basically fried cheese balls and so good. It's just cheese, flour, eggs, mustard mixed into dough and then you roll little balls and fry them. Yummy!
We have a seriously yummy Tuna steak recipe that we make a bunch for BBQs along with some typical lux things from the butchers in the village. I like making baked potatoes but DH prefers fries or pasta salad.

Hmm, it varies. American bbq? I really love pulled-pork bbq sandwiches with lots of bbq sauce. Or ribs. Also macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob, and mashed potatoes really bring out the American in me. I'm a weird person who doesn't like ketchup or mustard or pickles generally. I usually eat hot dogs plain except for the occasional Dairy Queen cheese dog or chili dog from local DC popular haunts.
The SO is veggie so he eats bbq'd vegetables and tofu or seitan. I don't really cook my own bbq but I will eat it if I'm somewhere that has it.
As far as Croatian/Balkan tasty grilled meats go, my favorite is pljeskavica which is a very juicy, tenderized burger rubbed with black pepper and onions. I also like it with kajmak which is a Serbian-style whipped cheese and ajvar which is a pepper-based red garnish.
In London? I'm all about Nando's peri-peri chicken. I love spicy food. I've also really enjoyed Slovak grilled meats which I found to be a surprising delight.
