H just texted me that his co-worker just found out his girlfriend tested positive for COVID. They sit in the same room, unmasked.
There's nothing we can do at this point, right? It's too early to test (even if we could find one)?
Oh no! When were they last together? It’s a secondary contact so most likely on the early side no matter what. At work we usually have to just advise people to self-monitor and wait to test if that becomes a direct contact.

Thanks, everyone, this has been really helpful. I'll try a few of the recipes (I know H will like them, even if it ends up I don't), and if I still don't like them, I won't force the issue.
I love beans and nuts, but they don’t love me. Beans are easier to digest if I mush them up first like PP suggested. I also don’t eat dairy or eggs. Here are ways I get more non-meat protein into my diet:
Protein smoothie for breakfast every day Adding nutritional yeast to veggies. Adding hemp hearts to soups, veggies, oatmeal, etc. Sun butter on apples, celery, or whatever for snacks.
ETA: I know that wasn’t your exact question. Maybe it’s helpful? If not, ignore me.
There is such a variety of textures to beans. Roasted chickpeas taste nothing like black beans, which taste nothing like white beans. Is there a type that you really can’t stand? Have you tried blending a soup with a lot of beans to make it creamier? What about hummus?
Lentils are another good option- especially red lentils since they cook down to a smoother texture. If you make lentils into a “meatloaf” or burger the texture might be less obvious.
Edit also if you don’t like beans try quinoa or farro they are grains with a good bit of protein.
I do like hummus. A lot of store-bought kinds have a lot of sodium, though I might try making it at home.
What ways have you tried and disliked beans in the past? Alone or mixed with other stuff (soup, pasta, salad, rice, etc)? Whole beans or mashed? In a tortilla/pita vs just on a plate?
Have you tried lentils? Because they’re small I’m not sure if that would be easier for you.
I don't mind them refried, but, not healthy.
I can tolerate them if there's a couple mixed in with a lot of meat (like a handful of beans on a chicken burrito). But something with *just* beans (whole beans), like bean soup, nope, didn't like that.

Has anyone successfully gotten over an aversion to the texture of beans? For health reasons, my doctor wants me to eat less red meat (I didn't eat a lot of it to begin with), and eat more lean meats, fish and beans.
Nuts aren't an option for protein -- I'm not allergic, but most whole nuts make me sick to my stomach. I can eat peanut butter, and I can eat macadamia nuts.
Wow, that's so helpful. Why? Have you had a bad experience yourself? If so, what went wrong and do you think there was anything you could have done differently?
I am not against the broader tests/screens. But here is an example from the article of saying they can detect something that is extremely unlikely:
Both Labcorp, which purchased Sequenom, and Myriad Genetics offer screenings for one disorder that is so rare its prevalence is unknown, and another, called Jacobsen syndrome, that affects 1 in 100,000 births.
Dr. Diana Bianchi runs a National Institutes of Health laboratory studying prenatal blood screenings. She said of Jacobsen syndrome, “I’ve never seen a case of that in my 20-plus years of practicing genetics.”
THESE TESTS DON'T *DETECT* ANYTHING. THEY'RE SCREENING TESTS.

When I'm going to post something that contains @ content in a discussion on an article (not a randoms thread), (and yes, I have screwed up a few tiems) I'll place it between spoiler tags

I had mentioned to the parent of one of DS' friends (the parent is friendly and both H and I get along well with him) that we were interested in buying a home in the town (we currently rent), but that homes rarely go up for sale here. He said his family was planning to sell their home after this school year ends. It's a nice house that meets most of what we want in a home (under 2k sq. ft, 2 bathrooms, etc.).
Is buying a home from a friend/acquaintance a bad idea? Obviously this is all theoretical -- we don't know how much they'll be asking for it, whether we'll be ready to buy at the time, etc.
I was shamed by show me your wfh space thread on ML. I finally purchased a real desk, and ordered a smaller rug so I'm not perched weird in the room to avoid it.
I saw your response, and thought in my head "You want to see my couch and end table?" because that's usually where I work. And the end table is just for holding my coffee mug.

I have borderline high blood pressure, and recent bloodwork also showed borderline elevated blood sugar and LDL cholesterol. My doctor recommended trying to control it with diet -- specifically the Keto diet, and tells me to eat lots of protein like chicken and fish, eat lots of nuts, veggies and fruits.
Look up Keto diet at home. The website says "Avoid nuts and fruits!"

"Dear Vitamix,
I feel like I should preface this by telling you that what follows is probably going to be the weirdest contact you’ve ever received, and it’s definitely the weirdest contact I’ve ever sent. I apologize in advance for literally everything I’m about to tell you.
My name is [redacted], and my wife and I have coveted a Vitamix for several years now, as I have a chronic disease that makes fiber very difficult for me to digest and my wife is an avowed lover of smoothies. Black Friday sales offered us the opportunity we hadn’t found earlier, and we finally ordered a Vitamix from Amazon the day after Thanksgiving. We were quite delighted when it arrived on our doorstep several weeks ago, and immediately brought it inside and absently set it down on the kitchen floor “just for a quick second.” That was our first mistake, and this is where things get weird."

He'd probably take the $18k, book a non-religious officiant for a fifteen minute ceremony at City Hall wearing clothes we already own, no reception, and spend the rest on the honeymoon.

Fuck cancer. My mom's cousin passed from pancreatic cancer this morning. When she lived in Canada, we used to visit once a year, but she moved back to Scotland several years ago, and I hadn't seen her since my brother's wedding ten years ago.
I didn't know they'd made a show. I'll watch. I liked the book and I love the way he writes. He might be one of my favorite authors right now. I enjoy everything I've read by him (Anxious People, A Man Called Ove, and Beartown)
There's a sequel to Beartown if you haven't read it yet.
