Can you explain this to me like I’m Five? I read an article in the NyT and I’m still confused about what is now on the table. It seems like earlier someone was saying a snap election was bad for the people who don’t want Brexit or a no-deal Brexit but perhaps I misunderstood? Could Johnson be out now that he lost the majority? But then I heard he was booting people from the party? (How can he do that)?
Sounds like the consensus is I'll go and plan to see ~1/2 of it. And eat there.
If you can only see half I recommend the history. You start at the bottom and go up. I would devote at least two hours for that section and then stay for lunch if you can!
It’s a start. I’m waiting for more from Raimondo and state policy. She did post on FB about it in English snd Spanish!
The video is terrifying.
I admit my expectations are severely tempered by what I’m hearing about the quality of the state investigation. I’m no Raimundo hater as a general rule, but as an outsider talking to people who are on the other side of it, it basically sounds like it is being mishandled on a number of levels.
That’s unfortunate. Mayor elorza came out asking them to close the facility and the most recent report I heard was that they are actively seeking witnesses and videos. I have so little faith in the government of this state that it would not surprise me that this is what they ask for publicly but behind closed doors/ in the back it’s being grossly mishandled. Which is a damn shame.

Also very local to me and I know many that were there. The governor is in touch with the state police. One of the lead protestors works in the PVD mayors office and is a former statehouse rep so I’m hopeful we will see some sort of penalty for the driver. Everyone was talking about this st work today and I bet more ppl will join the protestors next week.
Serena definitely left because she was selfish. When they are in the woods on their last night (in Maine? VT? Nh? Ny?) Fred openly admits he didn’t realize how hard it would be for Serena. Not being able to read or write is soul crushing for her. And we know Fred is sterile - he even joked that maybe Serena would have left him when he couldn’t give her a baby.
So staying in DC would be empty for Serena. A new handmaid there wouldn’t help her unless she found another driver to have sex with her handmaid....
In my line of work we routinely need to send thank you notes/emails. If I don’t get one from a candidate, that makes them less compelling. I also want the thank you email to be personal and hit upon something we discussed in the interview. All things being equal, if I had two amazing candidates, I would hire the one with the better thank you note.
Special snowflake, here, since my husband and I have different last names. I've seen people with $$$$ where the couple will have a specific charitable trust or something in their names that they use for donations, so it makes more sense. Like the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation or something.
When I got married my college sent me a card but put my first name and my husband's last name on it, and I'm like, "did I tell you to do that? No. I did not."
In a class list of donors we would still list the names of the alumni, even if gift was received through a family foundation or donor advised fund.

Many people know I’ve spent my entire career in educational fundraising. Your colleges/alma maters know where you are. They spend lots of money on research to get updated addresses, find cell phone numbers, etc. If big data knows where you are - your alma mater does too.
We get hate calls from everyone no matter what we do. We also keep special notes and have special data base fields.
That being said our standard is to address to alum only (unless you are also parents or grandparents!). If married couple are both alumni it defaults to either stacked names or older alum first and second alum second. Our system defaults to older alum is primary unless they are in same class then it’s alpha by sort name.

I was stranded mid trip when SkyBus went out of business a while ago. Maybe a decade or so ago? I took a flight Friday evening from NH to Ohio and they announced Saturday morning they ceased operations. I had to buy s one way flight home on Southwest that was $$$$.
I feel very sorry for all the travelers and wish them the best. I also hope Norwegian doesn’t go out of business as I’ve been eying a flight to Scotland.
Before I delve into all of this, this is where I do a shameless plug for my new life in University Development/Advancement.
If you love your alma mater, please, please donate to your university/college's scholarship fund. I know at university, funding is the main reasons students drop/stop out.
If you can give even $500 a year to a urgent/immediate need fund, please do so. It makes a world of difference.

I had no idea I could donate to an urgent need fund. I’ve refused to donate to my school because of their history of absolutely wasting money (two name changes/rebranding that failed). If I can earmark money to students that need it, I will!
Your school might not have an urgent need fund, but even a general fund directly supports financial aid for students. Every dollar of an unrestricted fund frees up other money and offsets/lowers tuition for ALL students - even full pay students.

Welcome to the business.
I so believe in our mission and wish we could be at 100% alumni participation.

College costs will only continue to rise with things like the tax on large endowments and the most recent proposal to no longer allow tax deductions for gifts from parents to higher ed. Taxing endowments = less money for financial aid and more money needed from tuition! So short sighted.
We have a flight coming up next month with Norwegian from providence RI and I just checked their site. They are grounding the max 8s, which gives me peace of mind. I was worried because I know they fly this plane on their providence to Ireland routes. They’re offering full refund or rebooking for canceled flights
FYI they are bussing PVD pax to NY to then take a larger plane to Europe.

I know a bunch of people in his district and they seem to like him. My rental property is in his district. But he should sit the fuck down after he played that shit earlier this year and stick to being a congressman in his district.
In other news, my current congressman is way better than Seth Moulton.
Truthfully I think more states should follow California’s example. Election Day should be the end of a month-long period when you can vote by mail or in person (and maybe eventually online?) at your convenience.
That makes the discussion of a federal holiday moot. I’m on board with replacing Columbus Day though.
I like this voting strategy.
As for Columbus Day, several cities and towns in my state have replaced it with Indigenous Peoples' Day, and I'd totally support that at the national level.
We celebrate indigenous peoples day at my office and it’s a holiday. I wish the state would follow suit.
We started ours - correction, I started ours. So far we have the max removed (claim 0 on W2's) and typically get a pretty good refund ($4k or above). This year, so far, I have about 3/4 done and we owe $250. Not at all like last year and nothing has really changed (3 dependents, married filing jointly, make about $140k, have a house, also a rental property that doesn't make much money - but a lot of equity, and max out the $5k dependent care pre-tax and then have about $5k after that that we pay post-tax, donate some money, but not a lot.) So, I feel like something is different and we're paying more now.
I'm not sure where that change is mostly happening since I was talking with my officemate and their family has almost the exact same details (3 kids, rental, house, etc.), except only one income (around $80k) and his is so far getting about $5k back.
We're in a similar situation including income but minus the rental property. We usually get $3k-$5k back but this year we owe. H did make more money but his income has been increasing over the last few years and our refund gets a little smaller but we have never owed before.
I’m in the same situation - normally get $3-5k back but this year I owe. I got effed by losing out on state and local tax deductions.
We’ve had threads before where we talked about how fat shaming Christie is wrong. I can’t find it right now but it’s interesting that I got such a vehement reaction. I want to say it was after his family was pictured on the beach during NJ shut down.
And FWIW, the reason people find it hilarious/hypocritical for Trump to give fashion advice on how to appear slimmer seems like fat shaming to me (it’s funny because he is also not a slim man). I read the article. Trump’s advice insinuates that Christie’s obese body is not appealing. It that may be true that he would have a hard time winning as an obese man AND studies show slimmer bodies are more likable. But again - that just demonstrates the societal impact of the fact that most ppl don’t blink at fat shaming and that many Americans find obese bodies to be gross.
I’m sorry if I came across too strong or flippant. I was also not trying to be inflammatory. It was not my intent to spark a heated discussion. I asked the question because I didn’t think she intended to fat shame but it could be interpreted that way by certain people.
Thank you ESF for helping to explain where I was coming from. I’m at my heaviest ever right now and very self conscious and in a shame spiral over it, so I also recognize that I’m probably projecting and making it about me when that was not the intent.
I’m sorry you are dealing with that. I’ve been there and it sucks.
It’s disappointing that others here haven’t seen fit to apologize.
ETA- and I don’t think I see the title of the article as fat shaming as it’s just reporting on. trump fat shaming. Insisting that fat shaming is OK as a general because Trump and Christie are awful is what I’m bothered by.
Their silence speaks volumes. Thank you for your support ESF.
I agree with your ETA statement and that’s what I was attempting to convey.

Apparently it’s getting destroyed by critics (shocking).
I just disgustingly smirk when I remember (one of?) the motivation: DONALD TRUMP TOLD CHRIS CHRISTIE TO LOSE WEIGHT: ‘YOU GOTTA LOOK BETTER TO BE ABLE TO WIN,’ BOOK CLAIMS
I think I need a new job. I’m a manager, was hiring my 2nd in command. My boss (who knows nothing about my day to day, needs and the team I manage) selected the replacement without even consulting me (not my preferred candidate and he knew it).
I’m so sorry, that’s awful. Does your boss normally overrule you in the day to day decision making? Why does he get to decide for your team?
I have a manager/director title where I report to an Exec Director. I would definitely consider quitting in this situation.

I read the whole trilogy and binged the entire first season. Show was good, books were better. I don’t think Marcus was well cast, or st least I thought he was much too meek in the show. I can’t wait for season 2!!
