I mean, I don’t think you’re crazy for posting. We hear things all the time like, if you don’t shovel your sidewalk and someone falls, s/he can sue you! [br!
Litigious American signing in...I did just that 9 years ago after slipping on a neighbors icy sidewalk and breaking my leg in 3 places (if you’ve been around that long, it was a well documented saga here). I got a fairly sizable settlement.
Mine was in daylight and the neighbor was in pretty clear violation of city rules (plus they were giant assholes about it), so a bit different, but I don’t think you’re crazy for considering it. I’m sorry you find yourself in this position.
Your neighbors were totally negligent! That was 9 years ago?!?!?!

Wouldnt it be the responsibility of the city for the lights and the street? I guess it depends on your location. I’m sorry you’re injured, sounds like a terrible accident.
At first I was wondering why there was a post from the future (September 1, 2019). Then I’ll realized what was happening - it’s European. I’ll see myself out.
LOL I get that - but I guess I am thinking of the last time I actually looked up to notice the type of plane that was flying over head. I don't do it often, if ever.
There are people that do weird things for hobbies. A guy at work listens to railroad scanner chatter, and pops out of his office to watch the train go by every time. He's even visited gigantic switchyards for vacations. So watching planes isn't out of the norm for people like him.
This isn’t uncommon at all. I bring my scanner on all train trips to listen to the chatter.
Moving to Rhode Island has been like nothing else, though. People here think driving 15 mins is a hardship. And the fact that I commute over an hour to Boston is like, incomprehensible.
Anything over 20 minutes is what I call R.I. far. And I don’t go to Newport without an overnight bag.
Add me to the list of reluctant landlords not by choice.
I moved for work nine years ago and was deeply underwater on my condo. I got s lot of advice on MM and considered walking away but we rented it. I lived for YEARS in sheer terror that I would be fucked at any moment as a) it did not break even with rent and mortgage payments and b) I needed the rent to pay the mortgage.
I am exceedingly fortunate to have had good tenants and a strong rental market. This is the first year (9 years later!!) that the rent covers my PITI plus condo fees on the property. I guess at this point I consider it forced retirement savings. We will have paid it off in another ten years so at this point I might as well keep it.
It still takes a great deal of mental energy - I had to call a plumber for them this week - and I would have rather sold it all those years ago.
That's awesome. Too bad Republicans decided to tax university endowments (which provide financial aid, among other things) to pay for their tax cuts to the wealthy
The most ridiculous part of the tax bill was the endowment tax. It’s a spiteful tax on what the conservatives think is s liberal bastion but in reality taxing endowments just causes tuition to go up bc it’s less money for fucking financial aid!!

I have fostered dogs before although I don’t have one right now. I volunteered with the local rescue where I adopted my beloved pug (I can’t believe he has been gone for two years).
I gave up fostering last year bc of my work situation but it was very rewarding. I had some short term fosters (a few weeks) and some long term (3+ months). I really wanted to keep my last foster but we couldn’t commit to having another dog at the time.
It can be hard to say good bye. Also all fosters have different needs which can be tough.
He had been kept pretty separated since he was clearly a target. All of the people serving time for things he did, like serious time, all of the family / friends of his victims in jail (he didn’t run with 100% innocent people and the people he killed and had killed some weren’t innocent lives either so they’re likely to have friends and family Doug time) plus his age.
This was during a prison transfer and it seems unclear *why* he was being transferred at all.
But they had two people they saw enter his cell and both have prior connections to him and his past.
TW
He was severely beaten and eyes gouged out.
I can assure you he hasn't been in RHU for the past 30 years. He was in general pop. As general pop as Hazelton can be because that place is fucking nuts.
I didn't see the tranfer part, now that is interesting and hope they get some more staff at least after this incident.
I do think there is a connection between the show and his murder but who knows, the mafia may just be very fucking patient people, lol.
I hope the prison doesn't get nailed with a lawsuit
He was only convicted in 2013. He disappeared in 1994 and turned up in Santa Monica in 2011. So no, he wasn't in prison for 30 years. He was living in Santa Monica!
Am I the only one with no interest in dailies? That just seems like a lot of work. Like I have to find somewhere to store all those boxes and open something new every day? Lazy contact lens wears unite.
In fact I wonder why people use them? Is there a medical condition that requires them?
I have terrible vision (-7.0) and don’t like to wear glasses. I do use monthly contacts though.
I love dailies (also -7). It's really helpful in the summer with my allergies. I just toss my contacts each night. I feel like monthlies are more work because I have to save the contacts, get out aolution, use a case etc.

We just got Bird a few weeks ago. Now the city is making them get permits and have s long list of regulations.
The biggest one is they will only be available to rent sunrise to sunset. Supposedly someone from the company will collect them every night and then redeploy them through the city in the morning. I don't see how this will be profitable for bird. They will also pay $1 per day to the city per scooter.

We are pretty lucky. Went to a $$$$ school but I only had about $15K in Stafford loans and my H had about $20K from undergrad. We paid them off in ten years but we also had very low interest due to graduating in the early aughts.
Y'all "go outside to smoke" people realize that in a lot of communities outdoor smoking is also being banned, right?
I am aware that some municipalities have banned smoking in public parks. Are there any municipalities that have banned smoking on sidewalks? I am not aware of any, but I also know I am not up on every single municipal law in the country.
Yes, Providence RI has banned smoking on the sidewalk in a small area downtown.
It's sooooo bad here. Thank god I have central air.
What the heck kind of sorcery is this!? No one has central air! I’m sooooo jealous. We don’t even have a window unit in yet because it’s too heavy to carry up from the basement.
Previous owner installed it!! A bunch of houses on my street have gotten those ductless ones in the last two years.
No, we did not change the locks. There's really only two exterior doors (the third is a glass sliding door with no keyhole), but it honestly didn't really occur to me. It hasn't been a problem. We did change the garage keypad to something we would easily remember.
We changed them at our first house because there were 2 different keys for the various exterior doors and I wanted everything to be on the same key.
I didn't change the locks either. I didn't think it was a big deal.
On the topic of the skirt and open front desks, can we ban elevators with mirrored ceilings? There is nothing quite like being in the elevator and realizing that if you look up, you can basically see down my shirt. Good times.
My conclusion is simply that we need more women designing stuff. When I was in the hospital in August, my room had a sink in the room and a sink in the bathroom, but I basically couldn't use the one in the room because it was too far back from the edge of the counter and my short arms couldn't reach.
This is my pet peeve with sinks!! My new office has this, its horrible. I can't reach it, the counter gets so wet, etc. please put the faucet and the basin closer to the front edge.
My office moved to a new space with an open floor plan in the last year. The cubes are low walls and are very small. They are in rows of five deep against all glass walls and are then in sections of 4-5 wise with offices surrounding the cube banks. The offices have glass walls but solid doors and are also teeny tiny. There are lots of mini huddle rooms and privacy rooms though.
My biggest issue is that there is only one giant bathroom on my entire floor. One men's room and one women's room for like 150 people. There are six stalls. There are not enough toilets and the bathroom is really, really far from me. I've had days where I'm stuck in a line and it's a huge problem. And the bathroom is off the kitchen which is gross. If someone is sitting at a table in the kitchen they can see right into the men standing at the urinals. Ewww.
Listening to the involvement of high counselors in this process is eye-opening to me. Yet one more addition to the scale that tips it in the favor of those with means.
Also legacy admits continue to tip the scales.
I work at an ivy and we also have a special free program for alumni. We provide college counseling services for children of alumni. The college counselors act as traditional college counselors and help them with applications for any school. This is a great benefit for alumni and also helps take the pressure off for legacy admits. But our legacy admit rate is approx 20-25% compared to admit rate of 8% for class of 2022.
Some students are pushing now to get rid of legacy preferences in admissions.
Oh man that other thread is something else. The “not exceptional” BS, the random musings from everyone who is an expert on Ivy admissions, etc. geez. We never change.
A kid from a local private school got into all 8 Ivies I saw today. I did not read the article to determine his exceptionality. I figured the admissions offices did that already lol.
Haha, I always get pulled into the admissions threads. I can't help it!
This student is wicked impressive and any school would be lucky to have him join their community. 20/20 is amazing!
