I have never in my life sent TY cards for Xmas. Most of the gifts I get are opened in front of the person and they get an immediate thank you. The others I call on the phone to say "Merry Xmas and Thank you, etc..."
ETA: Also, I've never received a TY card either...
I wish I didn't have to, but it's just kind of expected with DH's family. They write thank you notes for EVERYTHING and would keep a running list of anybody who hadn't. We took pictures as he opened everything. We'll print out a picture of him with whatever gift, turn it into a postcard, and write a short note on the back.
I don't think Christmas TY's are expected but I do think they are nice. For me, you are more likely to continue getting nice gifts from my family if you acknowledge the gesture (which isn't always a TY card but a TY and hug in person, perhaps). My nephew/BIL/SIL don't acknowledge crap so they don't get big gifts anymore. For the people that mailed gifts, they will get a picture of C playing with it or wearing it. I guess the way I see it, if you go out of the way to think of my child and mail him a gift, I'll go out of my way to make sure they "see" him enjoy it. I'm a snob about TY cards though!
I rarely write thank you notes. I'm a terrible person. I did them for my baby shower. And if I get a gift from someone I don't see often, like family in NY ive seen twice in the past year ill send a note. But family & friends I talk to regularly get an in person thank you or a phone call.
For our immediate family I won't because we got them gifts too and I don't expect a thank you from them. But many of my uncles (Emmy's great uncles) got her things and that was totally unexpected so we sent TYs to them.

We did Chanukah with Dh's family. While we were opening gifts they handed me a pad of paper with Ari's gifts written down and the person who gave it to us right next to it.
I never ever thought I would have to send a TY card. I get weddings and showers but not holidays. Seems silly to me but I did it to make his mother happy. I mailed them a few days ago.
Not for Christmas, because family is right there at present opening and they get thanked in person. But I always send them for the kids' birthday gifts.
I have many IRL friends who don't even acknowledge kid b'day gifts and it makes me ragey. Or they do a Facebook post saying "thank you everyone for X's gifts"
I have never heard of sending thank you notes for Christmas. If we were mailed any gifts from people we didn't see over the Holidays I would just call and thank them. I am a anti- thank you note person anyways...
I send a thank you card to anyone that sent/gave a gift to N that isn't immediate family. I've been using treat.com for all my thank you's since she has been born and it makes it so much easier! I make the card online, add pictures and it is mailed directly to the person. The website is owned by shutterfly so it is a perk of DH's job, but I think I'd use it even if I had to pay for the cards.

This thread is turning my world upside down. I detest thank you notes, but they are like a religion in my family. The ONLY person I don't have to send one to is DH. I'm fascinated by the fact that so many of you don't do this, and a bit resentful now that it's the expectation in my family.
Out of curiosity, why is Christmas/Chanukah different than, say, a baby shower? In that case, I opened all of those gifts in front of people too, but I still sent thank you notes.

I'd never heard of this! It sounds great! I'm going to check it out, thanks for the rec.
ETA: Oh, I am going to go crazy on this site!! I just sent my first card and I bought a 12-card package! THANK YOU!! I feel like I should send you a TY card for telling me about it
I do to some people, especially H's family. They are card obsessed and are also very generous, so the combo guilts me into it. I never send thank you notes to my family for anything.

I don't think you should have to send them for this either. I only sent them because I didn't want to deal with people talking shit about me.
