Where does G-d command that you give 10% of your pre-tax income to the church?
I know the church I attended as a kid- the priest which was driving a benz at the time commanded everyone to give at least 10% or more. In that case I knew where the money was going.
Our senior pastor and his wife live in a one-bedroom apartment. I kind of wish we could pay him more.

Pretty much main reason we left the church and had to change schools. They were living in huge houses, going on nice cruises.. The churches locally to us do the same apparently from what the neighbors are telling me..roman catholic thing apparently.
I didn't read the whole thread but wanted to clarify something I said in another thread about tithing hurting.
What I meant was that for many people 10% is a big deal. And if you choose to tithe then that means that 10% is not available for other, fun things. I did not mean that God or the church is asking people to hurt -- simply, that giving means making some sacrifices in other areas so one is still being financially responsible. It makes no sense to me to expect to tithe and still spend to the same level as someone else making the same income who doesn't tithe. For us, that has meant delayed house renovations, smaller vacations, etc.
