Linus got diarrhea Wed evening when he woke up from his nap. It was just a little bit- mushier than usual. Thursday morning was more diarrhea, but he stopped in the middle of the day. The inlaws watched him and didn't check his diaper. They are HORRIBLE about this, it's an ongoing issue. I got him when they left and he had disgusting diarrhea all over- leaking out of his diaper and pants and his butt was completely red and raw. The diarrhea just got worse from there and Thursday night he started pooping in his sleep and has since. It's just disgusting liquid and nothing formed. We've been waking him up every couple of hours to change him, but it's just open sores now. This pic was yesterday and I would say today it's a bit worse, the sores are redder, more bloody, and more oozy. I talked to the pedi on Friday and they said without a fever there wasn't anything they would do and they don't even give abx for most stomach bugs even if it's a bacteria. I called the after hours line Saturday because he had blood in the mucus/diarrhea and she said it's still ok if he's not dehydrated and doesn't have a fever.
So.... today he threw up after breakfast. He did eat a little bit larger breakfast than he has been. He's gotten sick of BRAT so I added some more bland foods yesterday and this morning so he loved his cheerios. He also thought his "banana pudding" i.e. pureed banana baby food, was awesome and ate 6oz. So I don't know if he just overate or not. He feels warmer than usual. His rectal temp was only 99.5, so I guess he doesn't have a fever. They basically said for piece of mind I could bring him in, but it just sounds like a bug. My sister said she would want a stool sample checked. I tried to tell them I was worried about the sores and they gave an rx cream, but said for those there was really nothing else they could do either. It's 40 minutes to get there which means it's never an easy trip for a baby with diarrhea!
ugh, apparently our forum has reached it's image upload space or something for attachments.
Oh poor baby! You bet your sweet ass I'd take him in!
That was my obvious reaction, but I tried telling them his whole butt was covered in oozing sores and they still said there's nothing else they could do for it other than the cream he already has. They are making me feel kind of crazy!
I would ask them to call you in some Vusion Ointment to be honest or see if they have a sample tube since it's really bad and the Vusion is EXPENSIVE.
I looked it up and it looks like this compounded cream has the same ingredients in addition to others. I'm not sure if it would do any good? It's a local children's hospital concoction apparently.

Fuck that! Take him in! You're not crazy. Or we're both crazy ...

Thanks guys. It is soooo hard not to cry with him. He sometimes needs changed every 5 minutes and he just cries and cries. His whole body just shakes. Sometimes it sucks being a mom and having to be the "bad guy".
Poor guy If ernie doesnt respond this is what i remember. Slab a bunch of diaper cream on. Use wax paper or cling wrap (i cant remember which) cut to shape the diaper with a hole cut where the poop comes out of. Stick to diaper cream.
Poor baby! That hurts me looking at it. I would take him in. We took Leia in the other day for something like that but smaller and minor. She was bleeding every time we changed her BM diapers.

Poor kiddo! We are dealing with similar issues. Etta's in sposies, I slather on a thick layer of Desitin, coat with cornstarch powder, then put on a strip of wax paper or parchment cut to fit inside the diaper with a quarter sized hole around the butthole area. It acts as a shield to keep the diarrhea off the skin. Also, baking soda and oatmeal baths, and naked butt time. Hope he feels better soon!
Poor Linus!!! I hope whatever you do helps!! I would want to take him to the dr too! Also, I would be pissed at your IL's!!
I know. The first day I was LIVID. I have no idea why they cannot get it through their thick skulls to check diapers. Then when he had diarrhea overnight on thursday it probably would have happened then anyway. Soooo I'm trying to justify it like that. They were over here yesterday and don't know anything about thursday and I didn't say anything. MIL was ridiculous. Obviously it's very hard to see him like this, but every time I'd check him and there was poop she would fret like a crazy person, wring her hands, and get tears in her eyes. I politely scolded her numerous times pointing out that she was making it much worse on him when she acted like that. I finally had to take him to the bedroom every time I changed him because she couldn't grow a pair and be strong for him.

To be honest, it's times like this that sucks to have two kids. :/ I just had to change him after he'd been down for an hour (and had pooped)and he was so sad and wanted me to rock him to sleep. But Fiona's sleeping in the other room and waking up any minute so I can't just leave her unattended. I put him down and he stands up and says "snuggle" through tears. It just breaks my heart.
We just dealt with 10 days of constant diarrhea and DDs bum looked just like that. They didn't want to do a stool culture until it had been 2+ weeks of it. I'm sure it's extremely difficult, but are you trying to give him naked time to dry it out a bit? Our pedi called in an Rx cream, but ins didn't cover and it was $350, so we obviously didn't get it. Honestly what worked was naked time and cornstarch. We used A&D ointment or plain Vaseline overnight. Good luck! Poor Linus and poor mommy!!

I've tried naked time, but it was a huge failure. I have nowhere to actually contain him. The pedi warned that whatever type bug his poop was probably contagious, and DD crawls around everywhere. He's pooping like every 5 minutes during times and he has disgusting diarrhea all over the floor, which I'm worried about DD getting in before I can get it or not getting all of it (hard floors with crevices between each plank). I'm going to try the broken pnp and see if that will hold him for a bit with some towels down.

Poor little guy. DS2 had a rash like that as a baby and my then pedi had me mix up a homemade rash cream. It was zinc oxide ( I used Desitin), Maalox ( Not mint), and cornstarch. It worked really well. The Maalox will help with the burning by neutralizing the acid. If it gets worse it might be yeasty. Creams will make a yeast rash worse.
I figured naked time would be to hard for an active little guy like him... And I didn't even think about Fiona getting into it, yuck.
I have heard of the Maalox thing before. MIL was telling me the other day they used to use it on patients' bed sores (she was a nurse) and it worked great. Hope it gets better soon!
Poor Linus!! How is it now, Biblio?? Any developments?? Did you take him in?? I feel ya on the 2 kids though, it's really hard when one is sick not enough hands and cuddles to go around!
