"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"
He searched the guy??? Glad you are safe! Did you talk to him?
Yes he did. And apparently he said that, as per my story, the guy had been lying to me about how he lost his job (what?) and that he wanted me to stay safe. When I questioned him more, he said he wasn't allowed to tell me any more details.
I thought your date guy was waiting in Wisconsin. Or Wyoming, whatever. he went up to the border station?? Why did the border police know what he told you about losing a job? I thought he was a lawyer?
the border crossing into Seattle must be super relaxed, I've only shown my passport, smiled and driven through.
It depends on who you get and what the current climate is. Maybe there are no assholes at your border crossing, but even Verona chimed in to say that she used to have this exact problem when crossing the border to see her then-boyfriend. Her reason for visit wasn't convincing enough to let her through. If they asked her why she was traveling and she said, 'to meet my internet guy at his cottage' then that could warrant some side eye.
I imagine it isn't a great time to be a Canadian trying to get to the US, given the current interpol situation we have going on. Any time things like the Magnotta case happen it's harder to cross borders because everyone's on higher alert.
Did you hear magnotta was arrested today? This case fascinates me and no one in the office knows what I'm talking about. They nabbed him in Berlin. Yayyyyyy.

I think you're thinking of someone else? I was meeting him in Michigan and he didn't go to the border station.
They asked me questions about certain things and said my story didn't match what was on his file, and that he might have lied to me and then he looked me square in the eye and said "I'm letting into the country today, however, please, PLEASE, stay safe." And that freaked me the hell out. So I drove 5ish hours back home.

Michigan, and I think she means that the border guard searched lawyer guy's file - not lawyer guy himself.
And apparently border guard is telling her information from lawyer guy's file. Apparently this is allowed in America.
How am I making no sense? Contrary to popular belief, these goings on are completely real, so they must make sense. I'm telling you exactly what happened.

He was in Michigan.
I assume she, for whatever reason, gave the dude's name to the border guard and he looked the guy up.
Something's still fishy, though. Studytime, did you Google this guy or anything over the two years you were in contact?

I don't know how he was allowed to tell me about his file. He didn't explicitly say "his file says..." but he implied it and seemed very worried.
So many questions! If one of my Canadian friends drives to the border and says "I'm meeting MaryWithoutSound" will they look up my file? Do I have a file? What the fuck is in my file?

So there you have it folks.
I talked to him.
My fault, Michigan, not Wyoming. And you said he searched him, and that he lost his job??
What if it is someone with a similar/same name as me? Does everyone in America have a File waiting at the border? Do Canadians have a file? Is it in a bag? WHAT IS GOING ON?!

I guess if border patrol felt like you were somehow suspicious, I can see how they'd want to look up your contact in the US.

I hope my file interesting, like a bad Match.com profile or something.
Betty Homewrecker likes reading, long walks and braiding her hair. Her dislikes include bathroom nazis, gelatin, & Target's online shipping selections. She probably won't murder you.

About file: some people have a file. Maybe everyone does. I don't know. But we were crossing the border a few years ago with another family and the guy (our friend) got stopped and questionned endlessly because of something on his file. His wife told me he gets flagged every time he crosses the border because of something from like 10 years ago. He passed, but we had to wait there for like 30 minutes while they questionned him.

I have to go to Canada fairly regularly for business. I have never been flagged/stopped, but some of my coworkers were bitching at dinner one night about how they get stopped and questioned every single time. so I must have a boring file too.
It doesn't add up because you are seriously skimming over any kind of detail that is requested.
What details would you like. His name? My name? I mean I'm being as specific as possible here. I told you we were meeting in Michigan. Muskegon to be exact. At the greyhound station there and he was going to drive me back to his cottage (40 mins away). But then I booked a motel instead. Anyway, I couldn't cross the border because they didn't believe I had sufficient proof that I would return to Canada. I had a family member drive up to meet me in Windsor (outside of Detroit, but in Canada) and bring documents like my course registration and proof of residence etc... I finally was able to cross the border, however due to what happened there (which I have already outlined in previous posts), both my family member and I decided that we should drive 5 hours home instead of going to meet him.
I spoke to him and he didn't believe that all this happened, thinking that I had faked the whole thing because I didn't really want to meet him. He sent me a rude email, telling me that if I was offended he didn't believe me, I should just "disappear forever". So I told him to have a nice life and to not contact me.
