"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"
About file: some people have a file. Maybe everyone does. I don't know. But we were crossing the border a few years ago with another family and the guy (our friend) got stopped and questionned endlessly because of something on his file. His wife told me he gets flagged every time he crosses the border because of something from like 10 years ago. He passed, but we had to wait there for like 30 minutes while they questionned him.
My file must be boring.
This I believe, because I knew someone with a DUI who tried to cross and was denied because of it. But he was actually at the border. I don't really buy a border guard looking up the file of someone who isn't there and sharing that information with someone else.
I guess the fact that I did not receive an email from you this morning says it all. I don't believe you about what happened. Here are the possibilities:
1) It happened, and I don't believe you, and you are so offended by me thinking you'd make up all this crazy shit that you don't want to talk anymore. 2) It happened, and I don't believe you, and you understand and you still want to talk to me. 3) It didn't happen, and you are a psychopath, and I never want to talk to you anymore.
If 2 is the case, feel free to be in touch. If 1 or 3 are the case, feel free to disappear forever.

I don't get why everyone is so confused. i'm sure the border control person did some kind of background check on the guy on whatever system he has access too. They have cracked down on security I'm sure so I bet this guy has some kind of sketchy criminal background so I'm happy to hear you didn't meet him. Next time, please trust your gut because you felt weird this whole time and look, you were right!
A plethora of questions were posted before me requesting details about your story, which is what I was referring to because you were answering with so little detail that there were huge gaps in the story for us, the readers.

I'm so relieved you believe me. It's kind of disconcerting when your story is so fucked up it sounds fake. I will definitely trust my gut the next time I'm in a situation this weird. Thanks. ({) (})
And for what its worth, I didn't say I didn't believe you, I just couldn't wrap my head around what exactly happened when the details you gave were kind of vague.

It seems to me that email is a pretty good indicator that whatever the border guard found must have been pretty bad. Otherwise lawyer guy easily could have just owned it. "Oh, yeah, I got a DWI XX years ago, oops!" or something. Instead, he turned on you.

I'm glad you are safe. You made the right call here. Don't be sad...it was a life lesson you got to learn the easy way. On to bigger and better things now.
Border patrol knows everything, especially post 9/11.
I'm sure it was something pretty bad if he lost his job as a lawyer. Isn't that what the border patrol guy said or did you know this already?
Lawyer guy said his contract was terminated before it even started due to budget cuts. I told the border guy he was laid off (that's what I remembered him saying) and the border guy just kept saying, "Lawyers don't get laid off in America. They get fired". So I called lawyer guy and confronted him about it and he said he uses the terms "laid off" and "fired" interchangeably and that he didn't see what the big deal was.
Here's the detail I want: How did you go from proving you were going to return to some rando border patrol mountie saying "I don't know aboot your internet boyfriend, eh. Sounds like a hoser." and telling you about his file. Did you tell him the whole story while you were waiting?

Hi Studytime, I believe you. And am thinking about how sad you must feel since you gave this guy 2 yrs. of your life skyping or whatever.I'm sorry. I know you're sad now but I think you have learned a valuable lesson. I'm glad your meeting didn't work out and you are safe. Thank goodness for your family member.
P.S. You've held up pretty well under the ML scrutiny. I hope you stick around.
Why are you telling the border guy anything? Why would the subject of him being laid off even come up? And what's the big deal about him being fired/ laid off??

She was waved through by Canada and stopped by the US, then waited several hours at the border (the US side). And yeah, they question people's stories if something doesn't seem credible. This isn't the part of the story that doesn't make sense.

The border guy asked me a million questions, and I answered him honestly. He asked me if he had ever been fired. I said no, he was laid off. And that's how that came up. And I don't know what the big deal was, but the border guard seemed to think it was serious. And since the border guy has access to a whole lot more information than I do, I trusted him.

Yup, I would bet you a million dollars he was fired for something he got charged with that is now on his background check. I'm scared for you to know what that was.
Is it normal for border police to drill you about the person your going to see? What if youre not going to see anyone? Why wouldnt they just be drilling you?

Right, but the dude she was meeting was the one being questioned. So how did Mr Border Patrol come to be looking him up? Idle curiosity?
Studytime, I think you got really lucky. I wonder what it was on his record that made such a stink. And your lawyer douche's response to you is a huge red flag.
