Yes, this deserved its own post, I don't want to scroll through all that to see if it was discussed, lol.
You can find horse meat at all grocery stores here. I think the french canadians eat it. I don't eat it, but I am not horrified by it either. Not like dog or cat, I mean a horse IS a farm animal. No?
I've never had it, but apparently it's pretty healthy for your (better than most beef).
I think the hoopla is that if something is getting into meat that's not supposed to be there, then what else is in there? Rat meat? E-coli? Fecal matter? It's anyone's guess....
I think one of the concerns is how the horse has been raised/handled. The horse may receive some supplements/medicines/treatments that are proven harmful to humans. So if humans eat enough horsemeat, there's a chance it would lead to serious medical issues. I believe the meat in Europe was not rated safe for human consumption.
Not that feeding cows and chickens antibiotics has been great for the food supply...
It is not popular here in the US and it is not regulated and thus not sold here for consumption. I personally do not have any desire to eat horse meat but I am a horse person. I don't see anything wrong with others eating it though.

But would it be a big deal if they found traces of veal in the meat balls? or chicken? or pork? Well, I guess pork coule be a problem for religious reasons. But really, it is just meat, no?
I just have no desire to eat horse. Ever. Or rabbit (even though people here do eat it, H grew up on it), or deer (which in Texas makes me an outcast because everyone here loves deer). I highly doubt I'd ever eat horse no matter how available it is. Meat already kind of grosses me out, the thought of eating horse is so not appetizing.

I think it would be okay it was labeled "horse meat" or even "meat", but it's been labeled "100% beef" which it's not. And the companies knew about it, but were selling unregulated meat to provide a cheaper product and make money. Lying about horse and calling it "beef" is not cool.
It's not really consumed in the US, though it's fairly common in Europe. I think it's just the fact that it's being used as a filler since it's cheaper, and not being disclosed.
Game meat is similar, though I have seen rabbit in grocery stores occasionally. I wish stores sold venison.

I've seen rabbit at the store, but only at a really crunchy co-op that also sells goat and game birds and things like that. You have to search pretty hard here just to find duck, which is a bummer because duck is delicious. Even lamb has only become mainstream in the last 15 years or so.

Ok, I agree with that. I wouldn't be horrified, like I wouldn't be horrified if my 100% beef meatballs were made with 10% pork 90% beef, but I get it.
And like I said, I don't eat horse meat either...but I struggle philosophically with all meat eating. At least horses are treated well until slaughtered, unlike chickens and pigs.
There is a deli around here that sells smoked horse meat. I have never seen it in the grocery store or anything, only at the deli. I tried it once and I thought it was alright.
It was only illegal to slaughter horses for a few years, then everyone got their heads out of their asses and realized that we have to send the thousands of unwanted horses somewhere and trucking them to Canada or Mexico isn't very humane or efficient for the most part.
Oh, and I'm not horrified or outraged, I just think it sound extremely unappetizing. I feel like it would taste gamey or something. Every time I eat something different (deer, frog legs, alligator) someone is always swearing up and down that it will not taste gamey and it always does! I even had someone trick me into eating deer because he was sure it was "all in my head" and I was like "WTF is wrong with this meat? It tastes bad!" lol.
I also agree about the labeling. That's a whole different issue.
