The median price per square foot for the 127 apartments currently listed in our (beloved) neighborhood is $2184. I will never amount to anything.
We're renters, so the comparison metric for us is price/sq ft/year. We pay $60/sq ft/yr, which is a relative bargain.
Where do you live that the median price is $2,000 per square foot??? Holy shit.
ETA - Are you sure you calculated that correctly? I mean, that means there are 500 square foot homes going for $1,000,000.
It's correct. I live in Manhattan. The calculation was done by Streeteasy (the real estate site I frequent)
Median price: $2,200,000 Median size: 1,965 ft² Median price per ft²: $2,184
Most expensive listing is $33 million (10,000 sq ft townhouse); least expensive is $350,000 (a 200 sq ft studio with monthly maintenance fees of $628).
We live in FL and paid about $87 sq/ft for our current home (bought in June, a short sale, comparable homes in our area are going for about ) $107 sq/ft.
Sold our last house, which was within city limits this past June at almost $120 sq/ft. When we bought in 2005, we bought it at $130 sq/ft.
Our house is officially a 1100 sq ft bungalow. At that calculation, $345. If you calculate the fact that we have a fully finished basement, half that, but that is not how it works.

Which is why we rent.
We sold our place in NYC for about $1300/sqft almost 5 years ago. Moved to CT and paid $400/sqft. We probably (no definitely) couldn't afford to buy back our old apartment if we were to move back now. :/
