I was going to say what Dick Move, mrsbpo and ECB said. Call the cops, but also call the son. That sounds like the onset of alzheimers. If so, you can't reason and warn through it and she might get dangerous (to herself and others).
The ones that she took and I got back are useable. There are two left on the vine that I can use. There are a few more plants that have just started to grow, so those should be okay. The main plant was huge, though, and had tons of flowers. We won't be able to use any of that one now.
Why does she hate your loofahs so much?
I think she LOVES the loofahs. In an "if I can't have them nobody can" kind of way.
I agree that textbook should call the police, but I do NOT think she should call the son. One or the other. But if the police are involved, contacting family members could be harassment. No bueno.

I did call the police. The officer came out, took pics of the plants, and is adding it to the report. He said if we see her trespassing on our property again to make a citizen's arrest (lolwut, I don't even know how to do this) and call them immediately. I guess they've dealt with her before. I did mention that perhaps she had mental issues/dementia and he said he doesn't think she does. He also said she needs to know they are watching her and he went and sat in his car in front of her house for like 15 minutes, hah. I bet he was playing Candy Crush on his iPhone.
Her son is living in a group home for drug addicts and I have no way of contacting him. The police can handle it.

I literally LOL'ed at citizen's arrest.
I did, too. Haha, what? Okay, buddy. How 'bout I just give you a call.

The funniest thing is that we would have totally given her a few loofahs or some seeds if she just asked! We give plants, cuttings, seeds, and veggies to people all the freaking time. Crazy old bag.
Is that a footprint I see in the second pic you posted? Or do you know for sure she cut them with something?
All funnies aside that really sucks that she ruined your plants. I'd be pissed off. Oh, and please post the newspaper's account of the incidents. I love the blotter reports.
Man. I also don't jump to alzheimer's. Some people are just crotchety and mean.
Right? I mean, I understand wanting to give the benefit of the doubt, but it's not always a case of mental disease or a bad childhood or too-tight underwear. Sometimes people are just fucking jerks.

Citizens arrest? Silly police officer!
Yeah - how about you just film her so you have the proof and call the cops? If she has something to cut more plants with i wouldn't want to be near her!
In my jurisdiction, citizen's arrest refers to misdemeanors (like trespass and vandalism under $400 damage) that happen outside the presence of a police offer. In practice it means that you call the police, state the circumstances of what happened, and tell them you'd like the perpetrator arrested. Then you a sign a citizen's arrest form & the police take it from there.
I really can't wait until the newspaper comes out.
PICTURES!!! you must return with an update.
My BFF in H.S. would have to spend a summer vacation in East Bumble, IN & she would snail mail me back the police blotter from the local paper. It was AMAZING.
When I was starting out as a reporter, then on most weekend or holiday shifts, I had to write up the police reports - sometimes for like 15 different towns. This would have TOTALLY made it into one of my blotters. I loved the weird stuff. I used to keep a list of odd things people used as weapons that included a spork and a tricycle (not for the same offense, sadly).
Sure, it might be crotchetiness, but it might not (if she these behaviors started over the past few years). Alzheimers isn't just forgetting stories and talking midnight walks. For some people, it comes with aggression, paranoia and violence. They found out DH's grandma had alzheimers because she pulled a butcher's knife on her grandkids. I don't want that to be tbc's kids.
