Good point - I can remember a few times travelling in places without good food options where I'm like "OMG all I want is a salad with a nice little salad for dessert".
However - and this is flameful, I admit, and not necessarily directed to the OP - why is it that almost all extremely picky eaters will "only" eat junky foods?
Yeah, I have wondered this as well. Superpicky people don't seem to like, say, broccoli.
I'm a supertaster, but there are only certain things I can't/don't eat - mainly bitter things. I thought the enhanced tastebuds affected were usually the bitter ones? How are your other ones affected?
This is me. Can you eat things like broccoli? Beer? Coffee? All are so bitter and icky to me.
Nope. The reason I initially suspected something in my early 20s was b/c my husband was eating a grapefruit. When I tried it, I was repulsed by the bitterness. I honestly had no idea how he could even eat something like that - that's how bitter it was to me. And I don't drink beer or coffee at all b/c of the taste, or soda - especially club soda. I think it's most likely the affect on my taste receptors is something like a spectrum, because I can occasionally handle something like dark greens or dark chocolate, but I also wonder if I have just conditioned myself to eat them as I've gotten older, you know?
I am pretty certain I am a super taster. I can't handle most herbs or things with lots of 'flavor'. I don't have problems with texture though. Uh, I don't consider it a medical problem though. I also don't gag at all. I don't know what the gagging crap is about. I don't freak out at trying new foods either.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster#Identifying_a_supertaster Although individual food preference for supertasters cannot be typified, documented examples for either lessened preference or consumption include: Certain alcoholic beverages[16] Brassica oleracea cultivars Brussels sprouts[18][19][20] Cabbage[18] Kale[20] Coffee[18] Grapefruit juice[19] Green tea[19] soy products[19] Carbonation in drinks such as in soda, beer, etc.[21][dead link] Other foods may also show altered patterns of preference and consumption, but only indirect evidence exists: Tonic water – Quinine is more bitter to supertasters[citation needed] Olives – for a given concentration, salt is more intense in supertasters[citation needed]
I don't eat any of these foods but maybe 1 pop a week and I might drink an alcoholic beverage once a quarter but I rarely like them.
And the OP eats a lot more than my husband does... he won't eat any fruits, veggies, nuts, and dairy (cheese/milk). *NONE*
Other than the tonic water and soy products, you just listed off ALL of my favourite things to eat.
Yeah, I'm calling some bullshit on this "self-diagnosed" supertaster. As the WSJ article posted upthread points out, a high proportion of professional chefs are (legit) supertasters, yet they don't subsist on a diet of PB&J sandwiches on wonderbread.
I am super picky and most of my aversions are not necessarily veggies. I will eat any fruits and most veggies. The things that i cant stand are eggs, peanut butter, cheese, sandwiches, any casserole, most things with creamy textures.

I've heard if this and it sounds awful:( I don't think I'm a super smeller, if that exists, but I definitely have a much more sensitive nose than most people.
This is me. It started with pregnancy and made me MISERABLE. It has lingered after the fact which makes me very sad. I notice it intensifies with hormone surges (ovulation, period, etc). When pregnant, all of a sudden my husband's breath had a distinct smell to it that I never smelled before. It made me so nauseous I had to sleep in a separate room from him because it would fill the room! I still smell it now and again. It's so crazy.
Did you see other people eat growing up? My cousin always had separate meals prepared for him and always ate separately from his parents, and now at 24 years old he still only eats strawberries, PB sandwiches, and chicken nuggets. (Although strangely, he'll drink pretty much any booze...hmm).
And my sister and I were exclusively formula-fed babies, and we've always been great eaters. We'll eat anything that won't eat us first (not supposed to sound dirty). Study THIS.
From the foods you listed, that was the first thing that popped into my head. For some reason, white foods (pasta, white bread, cheese pizza, potatoes, and chicken) seem to be the most preferred foods of people with this disorder.

Eek i think this describes me. It's not a dislike for me, i will gag by just smells.

I am shocked that Cilantro is not on this list. I know to a small subset of palates, Cilantro tastes like soap. I expected some comorbidity (since we are butchering psych best practices in this thread).
My MIL doesn't eat cilantro for that reason. Recently cucumber skins have started tasting very bitter to me.
Honestly if someone told me they would pay me 100,000 to eat mac and cheese or an egg mcmuffin, i would refuse. I physically couldn't do it. I would vomit by the smell alone

Cilantro used to taste like soap to me. Then I started eating it a lot more since we moved out to California (salsa and guacamole) and now I LOVE it.

However - and this is flameful, I admit, and not necessarily directed to the OP - why is it that almost all extremely picky eaters will "only" eat junky foods? I just have so much skepticism that this is "beyond their control" and not something that they didn't learn/pick up/form a habit around. Sure, I'd love to only eat pasta, pizza, and chips - THAT SOUNDS DELICIOUS - but c'mon! It's totally reasonable to not like some foods, but almost ALL of them? I will never understand, and I guess I should be thankful for that.
Back to the topic at hand - OP, what is your #1 most hated/gag-o-rama food item? ETA - my question was already asked. OP, what's something you've NEVER tried before?
I'm a pretty picky eater, and I wouldn't categorize most of the foods I eat as unhealthy.
I won't eat grapefruit or uncooked broccoli (it's too bitter, but it's ok when cooked) or cilantro (it tastes like soap), but other than that I'll eat almost any fruits or vegetables, and they're a large part of my diet.
If I have a choice I don't eat beef, but if I'm a guest I will.
I hate commercial white bread.
Spicy foods give me migraines, so that cuts out a huge chunk of foods (yes, a neurologist helped me do an elimination diet, and the only thing that made a difference was spicy foods) and I'm paranoid about ordering something that I think isn't spicy and then it is, because that means I have to either take migraine meds I can't really afford or spend the next two days in a dark room.
All my favorite foods are bland. Oatmeal, peanut butter and jelly on what bread, fruits, vegetables, chicken, tilapia, catfish, etc.
My most hated is raw oysters. I just can't eat them. I can eat them cooked, but still don't like them.
I think some people in here are being unnecessarily mean, but I do think its no coincidence that picky eaters tend to have the diet of a picky two year old. Two year olds are desperate for control. I assume some sort of battle of wills was lost by parents, and by the time the child was no longer eating a limited diet for control, their palate was somewhat set.
