Are you in 1 of the 31 states? Would you be allowed to order an entire drink for your child? This surprises me especially since the drinking age is 21 in the States and it is only 19 in Canada, yet there are many states that the kids are drinking far before they are 21.
You've got to be kidding me. You've never known a Canadian underage drinker?
Also, it's 18 in Alberta (and maybe SASK?)
I have never known a 5 year old Canadian drinker, nope.
I give my kid sips of alcohol, so I'm guessing you'd also call me a tool with poor judgement.
I get that there's history there, but don't let your history with alcohol affect other people, total strangers, just because you don't agree with it.
Is it the best idea to give a kid a sip of alcohol? Probably not. But is it worthy of someone cowardly and passive-aggressively calling them names in a public place? Because I'd question the judgment of someone who did that more than I'd judge the mother.
But it's illegal to give a child alcohol, it is not illegal to state your opinions. Saying something is a lot better than calling CPS on the lady. The restaurant could also lose their liquor license. Yeah I get that maybe some people do it at home with drinks that be much less appealing to a child, but a margarita is pretty tasty to a child. You also have to be careful (not you in particular, just parents in general). Would you want your kid going to school telling their friends that they drank out of their moms margarita? Children often over exaggerate and soon the story gets out of hand and bam CPS is at your door. This is a completely different world from when we were young people...
you keep saying that margaritas are delicious and tasty and blah blah blah. i am an adult and effing hate them. they are disgusting. and i am guessing some children might think the same too.
and i was allowed a kahula and milk once or twice a year as a kid and i don't recall blathering on and on about it to my friends or teachers.
i think you need to walk outside of your bubble for a bit and consider that not everyone in the world thinks like you.

And not everyone in the world thinks like you! LOTS of people think margaritas are tasty!

no shit. but i'm not the one using the taste of the beverage as part of a weak, skewed argument in which i make myself feel justified and validated for judging a total strangers parenting choices.

I am mostly just using the fact that in many places where I am, it's illegal.
Also, the people saying "OMG underage drinking is illegal!! Shame of you lawbreakers" make me laugh. You seriously waited until your 21st birthday to consume any alcohol? How cute.
I bet you were also the ass kissers in grade school.
I feel like you must be very sheltered if you or your friends never once tasted a sip of beer or a parents' drink as a kid. All of my friends had. I thought it was gross, & didn't drink til a few weeks before my 21st birthday.
It's obtuse to equate a sip of a drink with getting 5 year olds drunk.

First - an anecdote! When I was pregnant I ordered a fun beverage that contained no alcohol, but it looked like it did because of the glass it came in.
The presumptuous bitch across the aisle from us kept glaring at me and grumbling under her breath.
So I ordered another.
Next - behold the states that allow underage drinking with parental consent:
No, I wouldn't side eye a sip of any kind of alcoholic beverage. I probably wouldn't do it myself, but that's because I don't drink anymore. I could see H giving a child of ours a sip of his beer if he/she was curious, though, and I just can't see it being a big deal to me.

16 is a little different then 5.
Yes I get that but people are pearl clutching and saying underage drinking is illegal, so that would be include anyone under 21 (most places). I'm not saying you should order an entire margarita for your 5 year old.
Lollll. So am I a good mother or am I deserving of public scorn and have terrible judgment? I guess both?
You're going to be judged for a million things as a mother; hopefully you'll learn some temperance and tact as a result.
You can be a good mother and make mistakes LHC. Just because someone doesn't agree with something you do doesn't mean they you don't do plenty of things they would agree with. It is my opinion that giving a child of 5 years old alcohol is bad judgement. It is not your opinion, and that's fine. It's your child, not mine. My child will not consume alcohol at 5, but I'm sure I will do many other things worthy of judgement and I will learn just like everyone else. Such is life!
I haven't given my daughter any sips yet, but I'm not opposed to it. She can have a small glass of wine with us when she gets to her later teens.
I looked it up, and it's legal in NJ, and in Maine when we visit my parents, and in Texas when we visit my MIL. She can also drink while underage in Texas with her spouse. I am significantly more mortified at the thought of my daughters being married before 21 than I am at the thought of them drinking before 21.
I can't wait for the day when I'm a mom and some sanctimonious twat passively calls me a tool.
My baby and I will clink our glasses and laugh and laugh.
Or when some old bitch 'carpe diem's' you in a cafe and tells you that if she were your child's Mom, she wouldn't have been ignoring her to read a magazine.
Sorry, tangent.
I call it "fostering independence" and then I don't feel bad at all. No need to up in my kid's grill if he doesn't need or want it.
Ilovemypug, how old are you? Seriously, you just seem very young and sheltered.
Because I wouldn't let a 5 year old drink alcohol?
No. I've just noticed that you seem a bit immature. Not just in this thread.
And it's laughable to me that you think that you saying something to this mother woud actually make a difference. Like she would totally say "hmm, maybe that sanctimonious bitch has a point and I should change my entire parenting philosophy". It's cute that you think your opinion holds so much weight.
