I'm going to be slapping some lipstick on a pig here. What color would you paint my crappy kitchen? It's just a temporary color until we have the cash to do a remodel (3-5 years). We will paint the white walls and take down the teapot wallpaper and paint above the cabinets. The adjoining dining room is a green apple color. The living room is a medium generic tan color if that matters (you can see part of the kitchen from the living room). The hallway is the blue you see. Should I do a generic tan? Dark tan? Dark brown? The same blue as the hallway? Give me ideas. I want to start on it this week if I can.
I like the dark tan idea. Painting the fridge is super easy. I just painted mine with regular Rust-oleum a couple weeks ago. I rolled it on turned out great still need to paint the handles but really it only took about 3 hours including sanding and 2 coats over a couple days.

I think those cabinets are not very offensive (maybe they look different on my screen, they look darker than an orange oak to me), but I think tan would look good.
Adding some handles (brushed nickle would look good) would help the cabinets too.

Yeah, the cabinets are not an orangey oak, they're pretty nice. What style handles do you think?
I like the dark tan suggestions as well. However, since you have a remodel down the line..I say live it up a little. What about a shade or two lighter than the green in your DR? It'd tie it all together and still be fun! That green rocks my world though.
I wouldn't even worry about the fridge. Seems like work for something you won't have too, too much longer. And we can have a clean magnets out from under the fridge party together. I noticed today Rubes is missing a 1/4 of her alphabet..ha!

I agree it doesn't seem that bad to me. I like the idea of the tan or the green a few shades lighter. I think target sells packages of cabinet handles for not a bad price.

I say yellow or green. I know this board has something against yellow kitchens but I don't care. Our 70's dark oak cabinets are paired with a soft buttercream yellow (SW's Cottage Cream). The DR and kitchen are open to each other so I used the same color. It looks amazing in the DR with 5 huge south facing windows. It's part sunroom part DR.
We're putting lipstick on our pig as well but for a much longer period of time.
You can see how sunny the DR gets in the background.

I like the green you just posted. You know what I think would make a huge difference? Paint that backsplash tile, including the grout. Maybe do it the same green as the dining room or one shade darker, even ...
LOL. You guys I'm looking to do as little as possible to this room. I know it's ugly, it's far from ideal, but I really don't want to spend hardly any time and money on it. An afternoon of wallpaper removal, $40 and an afternoon of tape and paint is all I was thinking Maybe some hardware. Really the only thing that bothers me is the wallpaper and white dingy walls. Everything else I can live with.....for now. Check back with me in 6 months though.
