lauranicole91 first of all- hugs!! Laney was 16lb 5oz at 6 months and 19lbs at 15 months so she gained just under 3lbs in 9 months. But I realize she weighs more so that's a difference but just wanted to let know we had a similar gain. She also had labs done around 13m
I definitely think you need to push for labs and see a specialist.
In the last 5 weeks have you been trying to give fatty foods? I would add oil to as many foods as you can.
I also agree with PP that getting into specialists can take a while unless your dr requests it urgent so ask about that too.
I saw this on the app Most Recent Threads. I hope you don't mind if I jump in (I'm a MMM regular).
My DD has had weight gain issues since early on and we saw a pediatric GI at about 4 months for FTT. We got in very quickly (less than a week) because my pedi had the referral marked as urgent in bright red. We also saw a pediatric nutritionist while there. Due to her age, we didn't discuss solids other than holding off until 6 months, but both the GI doc and the nutritionist were extremely supportive of breastfeeding. They happily designed a plan for my DD that included breastfeeding as part of her diet. (When I told the pedi GI that I wanted to continue nursing, she said, "Of course!").They were also not alarmed by her size and she's about the same size as your DD (hovers between off the charts and around 2% for weight). They really wear wonderful and more knowledgeable than my pedi just because this is their area of specialty. I was very nervous but it was a really positive experience. Perhaps ask your pedi for referrals to a pediatric GI?
Sorry you are dealing with this It really does suck and is so incredibly frustrating.
Thanks for your story! My one concern is BFing support at 4m will likely be drastically different than such amazing BFing support at 16m.
After this whole thread I think I will try to get referred to a GI doc.

I think that is the way to go for sure. Mine had terrible bedside manner BUT they are excellent doctors. If you have a children's hospital near you that it the place to look first.

I have no advice to add, but there's been some great suggestions. You are a wonderful mama and you are going to handle this new obstacle with grace and wisdom! P is lucky to have you!

We do have a great children's hospital near by. But I think I will call the pedi back and see if she can get us on some special list to shorten our weight time.
How should I ask for the GI referral from my pedi? Or should I just call the GI and accept whatever wait period I have in store.
I would call the dr you saw back and say you were very concerned with her weight gain and would like to see a pediatric GI asap. My office has someone who schedules specialists so I had to speak to her. I'm sure your pedi will be able to give you a referral. If not, then I would call the local hospital and schedule it with someone who has the earliest availability.

Late to this but K was also ftt and we saw a gi doc and nutritionist every other week and he is now thriving. We also did lab and stool samples to rule out any underlying issues. Best of luck but you should see someone just so you get answers and can rule things out.
Laura, I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I can't imagine the stress and worry you must be experiencing. Just know that we are all here to support you and Pey. You've gotten some great advice in this thread. My anecdotal experience is through my brother and SIL. They went through almost the same thing with my niece when she was Peys age. By 18 mon I think she was 17lbs and some change. While she had been a decent sized baby her growth seemed to just halt around 8/9 months and she hasn't doubled her birth weight by her 15mo appt. their drs were very concerned and also tried to push my SIL to wean her off the breast. SIL was, like you, unwilling to completely deprive her of something so important. They did see specialists who ran labs, stool samples etc and were able to determine she had a pretty severe vitamin d deficiency/nutritional rickets I guess is what they called it. Now, I can't recall exactly what the drs said or did, as I only discussed it with my brother briefly in the sense of just catching up and seeing how she was doing. I know my SIL had to work pretty hard at keeping up with her vitamins, fattier foods, and trying to keep breastfeeding to intervals if morning/noon/night. Now my niece is 3yro and is still pretty tiny, but she is active, imaginative, smart and thriving. I believe she weighs somewhere close to 23-25lbs and can easily fit in 12 mo clothes. She is always going to be small, but at least they were able to get her to gain some weight and get her eating a wider variety of foods. Eventually she warmed up to WCM and drinks some only at night before bed. My SIL is currently still nursing her for comfort, and it doesn't interfere with her appetite. It may be a long hard road, but you can get there without having to sacrifice your nursing relationship with Pey. I hope you guys can get to a good specialist who can give you some assurance and help you get her to wear she needs to be. Hugs to you, girl.

We are set up for seeing the GI specialist a week from today.
That is a quick appt!
With my sons I have seen 4 different GI drs, 2 were good with breastfeeding and 2 were not so hot on it. So you may have to be very adamant that you want to continue breastfeeding, but are open to the best way to do that. It took me to realize that I needed to be vocal/ forceful of my opinion to be the best advocate for my kid.
Both boys were Diagnosed FTT at one point or another, hugs and cries with you. Praying you get some good solutions for Peyton.
I'd call your pediatrician's office and tell them that, after your appointment today, you'd like to see a pediatric GI as soon as possible.
This sounds like a great plan. Good luck! I'm sorry you are going through this.
I agree.
I'm sorry, I didn't read all the replies, but did they ever do bloodwork ever? I'd push for that, too.
I'd be worried about cystic fibrosis in a very very mild form that's just affecting her digestion/nutrient absorption, or another disease like that that's manageable but needs to be diagnosed appropriately.
And don't be afraid to ask for specific testing, too, even if it sounds crazy. Don't rely on these people too much, they are obviously not doing well by you.
Zoe's never been sent in for blood work and she's been below the 1st percentile most of her life.
I thought blood work at around age 12m was normal?
Violet had it early at around 10m because I was concerned but it's standard practice at my pedi to draw labs.
Just iron and lead testing, which I still haven't done, because they forgot and gave me the order at her 15 month appointment and said to just get it done before her 18 month.
ETA: Zoe's pedi is a nurse practitioner, which is why the testing is done elsewhere. They don't have a lab at the office.
