The season, not the accident.
I had this discussion in the locker room at the gym this morning - one of the other masters ladies was all "OMG, fall is almost here, my kids go back to school in two weeks!" And I was all "Well, fall doesn't actually start until late September, right?" So then she was all "Well, I consider it to start when school does." Keeping in mind that we don't get truly fall-seasonal weather until October-ish, I guess I just figured that I'd consider it to start when it actually does. LOL
When do you consider fall/autumn to start? OR, for you, what is the first harbinger of fall?
For me, Fall is late September. I was born on the first day of Fall, so I guess I've just always thought of my birthday and Fall to be kind of synonymous.

Right around when school starts / Labor Day. The pool closes, football season has started, school buses are back on the roads. And summer begins when school ends, even though technically summer doesn't start for another 3 weeks after that. My seasons revolve around events, not dates.
Since I grew up somewhere without a real fall, back to school sort of made me think of fall. It wasn't until we were coloring scarecrows and fall leaves in school that I figured it was fall...so October-ish. ;p
When we lived in CA, it wasn't the leaves turning and falling, (since that usually happens one week in December), but actual fall always coincided with fire season so that is what I think of when I think of fall....late Sept/Oct.
I have been told to expect fall big time in my courtyard, since the tree there is a Sycamore. lol
Fall for me is Labor Day. It's the teacher in me. And also, if I waited until Mid October for fall..I'd miss it. It's been known to have snow on the ground by then here.
The real harbringer for fall for me is on here and in my IRL when people say, "I'm off to get hay bales to decorate with." No people that's straw. And there's your annual PSA a bit early courtesy of me.
Early October, but it's really dictated by the weather for me. In my twisted thinking I like fall to start as late as possible. I love fall & I love summer, but I really, really hate winter...so the later fall starts the later winter starts...right??!!! (of course spring can still start as early as possible - I would really prefer it to start in early March) ;-)
I don't get her reasoning on the school thing. That would mean that for some people fall starts next week (which is when at least one school nearby starts) but others don't start until September. It's fall. It has to be consistent. kwim?
Definitely not with the school calendar. I used to feel that way when we started in September, but now the kids go back in August. Does anyone know why the keep bumping the start date earlier?? My Mom used to be convinced they were slowly trying to get to a year-round calendar.
I think of October now because that's when it really starts feeling chilly and I start swaping wardrobes.

Here in MN it's a state law that districts can't start until after Labor Day. However, some districts (including the one I work in) asked for an exemption to the start date and now start on the 20th of August..which isn't as early as some on here, but early for the Midwest.
Our distict did it because there's a large migrant population and due to funding and educational needs, they wanted those kids in school as long as possible before they migrated back as a family. So it's Aug-Nov vs. Sept-Nov. school.
It also has to do with struggling schools and state testing. They want kids in school longer to learn before state testing occurs, rather than "hanging" around after. It's an extra month of school before hand basically. The good news is, the 14th of May rolls around and it's my summer vacation..lol. That's pretty awesome.
Some it in my district also had to do with staff development. They wanted the kids with their teachers as long as possible before the busy winter workshop/dev. activity stuff started pulling teachers out.
Part of it also has to do with heating/AC/electricity costs. Late May/Early June can be super hot here. Too hot for kids to be in school, too much to run the AC that often and peak electric rates are nuts that time of year. August is at least cool in the morning, saving on energy.
That's all I got and the reasons my district does it I guess.
I actually had a dream last night that it was Fall already! The trees were orange and the leaves were falling. I was really sad. LOL. I love Summer SO much I don't want it to end.

I wish they would go to a year-round calendar. That would be awesome.
Any time after Labor Day. Loosely, I think of Sept-Nov as fall, Dec-Feb as winter, Mar-May as spring, and Jun-Aug as summer, but really the middle of those months tends to be when the weather starts transitioning.
School districts around here want to guarantee they will be on summer vacation before July starts, no matter how many snow days we get. So, they generally plan to go to mid-June and have the last couple weeks as make-up. In order to end in mid-June, they have to start the week before Labor Day. There are also more holidays in the school calendar than there used to be, so I think that contributes as well.
I get into the fall spirit in the beginning of September; mainly because I'm just sick of summer at that point. I like to get a jump on it early, because it's my favorite season.
