My cat got hit once and the person who hit him was sooo sad. They kept coming by even weeks after and bringing us gifts (we were children and very upset about the death). It was borderline creepy though, lol.

My cat got hit when I was 5, I was such a wreck that I couldn't go to school the next day. The people that hit her didn't even stop.
I once killed a bird and cried. Nearly four years later and I still feel bad. I think it was sick already though because it was flying weird/flew into my tire.
Was there anyway to tell who the owners were? We had a cat that was hit and it was awful. We found her on the highway after we got a call and my mom stopped traffic to get her Ughhhh.
I hate when these posts turn to questioning the op to make sure they treated the animal appropriately.
Sometimes you can't stop. It isn't safe. And while you can assume a dog is someone's pet, the same isn't true of cats. Our feral cat population is insane. I would be pretty scared of approaching a hurt cat because of that.

I don't think asking the OP if there was anyway to know who the owner was is crazy. You're right though as it is not always safe. My cat was killed on the highway--not safe to stop. BUT I think it would be the responsible thing to do to look at missing animal ads in the paper and Craigslist to see if there is a matching missing animal around the area where the cat was killed. If it were me, I would check regularly for a few weeks. If there was an ad that matched, I would contact the owner. That is what was done for us and we were very grateful despite the fact that our cat was killed.

I don't see this thread turning into anything- I asked simple questions. As a cat owner, I would be devastated if someone hit my cat, one, and two, just left it there to die because it *might* be feral. I was also put off by the fact that not only did she not say anything regarding my two questions, but that her first reaction was hoping she didn't have bad luck.
Ya. I know.
I just remember how bad it sucked to hit a dog. It sucked even worse to feel like I hadn't done enough and guilted by the Internet about it.
Yea, I agree with Chels here....no one is turning this into anything, but I majorly side-eye wondering about one's luck post hitting a black cat.
-Says the girl that has only hit a living animal once. A frog. I stopped and was a mess. Buried it in my yard with a proper funeral.
Oh and : Feral or not, a life deserves respect when hit by a machine made by MAN. That's what makes me ragey about stuff like this. We create shit to make our lives easier proceed to kill animals with said shit and then don't give them respect when we destroy them with our shit.

Okay, this post isn't at all what I intended it to be. I was very upset. I've always owned cats and we even had one get ram over. My mom found her at the bus stop and we took her mom and buried her. We were so upset that we stayed out of school that day.
Oh man I would be heartbroken. I saw a deceased cat along the road today and it broke my heart
This. DH didn't see it on our way out but was paying attention on the way home. I told him to look away. We both love cats too much. It makes me so sad when I see one on the road.
Sorry for the rant. I'm a major animal lover and get so pissed at all the dead wildlife and domestic animals I see daily from cars. The comment about luck rubbed me the wrong way.

What on earth does "respect" mean? Of course you should feel sad for taking a life. But burying a feral animal? Why? That deprives hawks, buzzards, vultures, raccoons, etc. from their meals.
Dogs and cats that were pets is different. You bury them in recognition of their companionship.
And sure you should try to see if it was a pet if possible.

My concern is if the cat was able to recover or not. I dont think you could have known unless you stopped, but being that it was a back road with no houses nearby, I am not sure what I would have done either. If it had a collar the owner could have been contacted though, and they could have taken them to the vet. Depending on the injuries.
I am sorry youre being questioned or feel judged about how you reacted, I am sure you are sad. I think the way your initial post came off was kind of odd though.

In the case of a cat, you don't know if it was feral or domesticated.
Most small animals that are hit end up being smashed to smithereens by repeatedly being run over, which is hardly a source for food chain continuation.

You guys are making this a bigger deal than it needs to be and causing an uproar was not my intent. I'm not that great at expressing myself well on here. I'm sorry I even brought this up.
FFS. I'm sorry you had to go through that. I probably wouldn't have stopped if I didn't see a collar at a glance. I'm of the opinion that people shouldn't allow their cats to roam around freely. Especially if they are such beloved pets. I know animals get out without your knowledge at times, but that isn't the case here most of the time.
This is how I feel. Our cat is indoor because we live off such a busy road. We only allow him on our screened porch.

I'm sorry you hit the cat, how scary. I probably would have done the same thing if I was in a similar situation. I think it was just a misreading of your OP. No biggie.

I'm sorry. I've hit many animals. I hope there wasn't damage to your car. The last few I've hit have done significant damage. I've heard many horror stories of people tending to injured animals only to get hit by another driver. Again, I'm sorry and hope you're okay.

I don't judge you at all! I totally have no idea what I would have done in the situation. I really don't. My main thought process after the fact would be to check ads though... You might find someone who posts that they have a missing black cat around the same area. It's a really sad situation, I know you feel awful and I also know you are a good person.
