Correct! I have no problem with kids reading it with parents, or trying it out, but usually for that age, it's not an appropriate independent book.
I'm not disagreeing with you, but how would YOU know this?
Also, Alan Rickman never said that, y'all.
I do know some things about it, and I do talk with others about it. You don't have to read every single book to know features of books at different reading levels. Harry Potter is a level V. I want to say level V is upper elementary/early middle school. Most second graders do very well with books like Magic Treehouse, Ivy and Bean, The Littles. Because they are age appropriate and have age appropriate content and at this level most second graders have the stamina for books like this, not HP.

I love HP so much.
We went to universal last year as our anniversary trip because I was dying to go to WWHP. It was fucking incredible and my h was amused by my nerdgasm. He really enjoyed it too though, it's really well done.

This is true. Alan Rickman is not married (but has been with his partner, Rima Horton, for 30 years), nor does he have children. It's a sweet thought though.
I am just going to pretend he said it and go on in my happy bubble.

Listen, there is a reason that the HP books are so popular. And not popular in the (gag) Twilight way. The writing is fantastic, the characters are incredibly detailed and flawed, the deaths.. which are throughout the series, are felt to the core, the overall themes and lessons are relatable on so many levels, both the protagonist and the antagonist have good and bad in them (except Umbridge, that bitch), the world that was created is so real.. The entire thing truly is a masterpiece. To not read it, well.. it's just silly.
Read it and hate it, fine. Read it and be ambivalent, OK. But to ignore something that is so embedded in our culture.. something that has spawned sports teams and theme parks.. I just don't understand. Plus, it's wonderful. Why not just try it out?
Exactly. There is a reason that adults like this series - they are incredibly well written. And I live that kids read them - even if they don't get all the nuance - because it introduces them to truly amazing writing, characters and even vocabulary.
My sister started them at 7. Did she get everything about them? Nope. But she loved them. And she has re-read them multiple times as she has gotten older (she is 19 now) and adores them even more.

I guess I missed the whole popularity of it when the books came out and I've never really cared to read them. I also hear all of the time "my little baby can read Harry Potter!! He's a genius!!!" Harry Potter is like the holy grail of whether or not your kid is smart. I also hear "but my kid can read Harry Potter, how come he is bringing home Danny and the Dinosaur??" Well because that is more developmentally appropriate for your kid.
This thread makes me want to get my books out immediately nothing made me cry more than Sirius' death...except maybe Snape's. I chucked the book away from me when Dumbledore died and then had to crawl after it, stunned, to finish.
The 7th book came out my year abroad in Australia and my roommate and I had to go to five stores and wait in line for two hours to get a copy. Totally worth it. We got McDonalds and lay on our beds and just read the whole day.
I had to read the first for school in 7th grade (1999...my teacher was ahead of her time) and got hooked. We were living in Belgium at the time and I made my dad walk me to the only English bookstore to pick up the next two. From then on I got every new one at its midnight release. I read the first out loud sitting in my glider in the nursery while pregnant.
Hello, my people. I'm so glad I found you. Oh, and I adore Alan Rickman. Sense and Sensibility, Love Actually, Harry Potter...his voice gives me tingles.
Also, I don't get it when people are proud they haven't read it. There's a reason it's so popular. Not like you get a prize for not following the herd.

In true ML fashion, both fuckstick and I have agreed that we would never sit on Mr Rickman's face, because then we wouldn't be able to hear that voice of his.
Let's just say, the sexiness that is Mr Rickman is a very old conversation.
It's one of my bucket list goals to get him in bed.
I admire this goal. He's on my list. If he showed up at my door I get a free pass and H can't say anything.
WHY did I go to sleep last night after watching Order of the Phoenix and miss this whole thread?! I am 1000 percent in for a ML GTG at WWoHP. It may or may not be true that our Christmas card last year featured a family photo taken in front of Hogwarts from our trip to Orlando that was planned in advance with coordinating outfits. It is also possible that I wrote a postcard to my unborn child and mailed it from the Owlery for the baby book.
If we have a GTG, I will bring my Harry Potter Scene It game for the hotel because no one will play with me here. I will also bring my wand and scarf.
I was knocked up when I went and didn't get to go on the ride. I want to do this soooo bad!
Also I didn't know I had two HP fans right by me! @thereigninglorelai sameoldash
A-I cried through this entire thread just REMEMBERING the deaths. Hedwig was the hardest for me because WHY KILL HEDWIG! She was his pet and therefore family! WAH!
B-I now have to reread all the books and watch the movies.
C-would it be wrong for my thirtieth birthday to be a Harry Potter theme?
D-Why must Potter ignorers/haters always come in these threads? You don't like it? Fine. GTFO! Let me cry in my butter beer over a freaking owl in peace!

Oh man, I'd be all over a HP trivia game. I've reread the books so many times I've lost count.
