I've never read them -- I always thought they were fantasy books and I'm not a fan of that genre. I'm definitely going to give it a go based on this thread alone.
I'm not a fan of Fantasy either, but these books transcend genres. They don't feel like fantasy at all to me.

ITA. It's a very human story with fantasy elements. But all the elements seem realistic, if that makes sense.

I want an HP nerds marathon GTG soooooo bad. We can do all sorts of stupid Sorting Hat activities and the cool nexties will make fun of us forevvvvvvvvvver, as we'll deserve.

When the first book came out, my mom bought it and read it to me (I was still young enough to have her read to me). We got every subsequent book at the midnight release and read them together until I was in high school. I got the last two at Walmart because the lines were practically non-existent. I no longer cared about the party, just wanted to get my book and go read until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. Ah childhood.
Now I need to go pull my books out so I can do a re-read. It's been too long!

I have not read books 5 or 6 (Seen the movies though!). But that was mainly because I read books 1-4 back to back because like Joenali, I was all, "Meh, I don't need to read these, blah blah blah." So when I started to read them, I effing DEVOURED them, then by the time I got to book 5 I was on a bit of an HP overload :-)
My whole family read book 7 in the hospital while my Mom was having her transplant. Whoever was sitting with her that day just picked up where they left off the time before. The book never left the hospital room, lol.
I think the part that got me the most (after Dobby dying, of course) was when all the people in the paintings cheered Harry after it was all over in book 7. With Dumbledore looking at him all proud and stuff :-)
I have been thinking it might be fun to go back and re-read them all.
Book 6 is my favorite. The battle scene at the end is incredible - the movie doesn't even come close to doing it justice.
