NHFR Vent/Sob Story: I thought I was moving

Please don't quote me, I may DD parts or all of this.

I don't think we're going to end up moving to Dubai. I'm super bummed. I worked really hard to get the job that would move us there. I beat out tons of other candidates. I am totally emotionally vested in it. I even agreed that I would be willing to re-home my dog (which I haven't done yet) so that we could go. I have spent the last 4ish weeks in intense negotiations about the offer/move and I think we've just reached an impasse. I will probably have to formally decline later today or tomorrow. I'm so emotionally exhausted from the process and it isn't even going to end how I wanted it to.

Major suck.

To make this H&F: I totally counted my chickens before they hatched - I quit marathon training because I thought I would move before the race on 9/28. It is too late to re-start now. Maybe I can drop down to the half?

I am so, so sorry Brit. It sounds like a crazy process, and after all your work & planning I can't imagine how tough this outcome must be for you. It's do hard to be prepared & psyched for something that just evaporates. It stinks.

I'm guessing there's no chance of salvaging things, based on your words here?

If it's any consolation, I know you're a killer athlete and could certainly run the marathon if you still wanted. Maybe I'd chose the regular one instead of the trail though!

thom - I don't think I can make it happen at this point. All kinds of concessions have been made on both sides, but I think we are still too far apart to close the gap and reach an agreement.

I don't want to just run a marathon, I want to run a faster marathon than the last one.  I might be able to snag a PR half if I put my mind to it for the next six weeks. I have been doing 2-3 8 milers each week and one each week is usually about 10 seconds off of my half PR pace... That might truly be realistic?

I'm sorry. I always get so excited about something and if it doesn't work out, I get pretty depressed about it. I am sure this will work out for the best in the end.

I think you could still do the full if you wanted. There's still time to build up some mileage. But, I am like you. I don't like doing a race unless I have a chance at doing well at it. Sounds like you are doing well for a 1/2 PR though? Drop down to the 1/2, then pick a goal spring marathon?

Brit - yes, I hear you on the marathon. That's what I wanted when I finally did another one as well. Not just to finish, but to PR big and run a good (for me) marathon. I think then the 1/2 is a great compromise if you can switch. 8 mile runs is a fine base for 1/2 training. Good luck with everything. What is your current 1/2 PR if you don't mind me being nosy? Hope your workout time can bring some solace right now.

Too much time. I did 15 miles back in June. The longest since then has been 8. I'm doing decent overall mileage 30-35/week. (With the exception of last week when the world conspired against me - actually, it was because I was doing a ton of projects around my house so the realtor could come take pictures...all ties back to the move.)

ETA: I could try a long run this weekend to see how far I can reasonably go. IDK, I think the half is a better bet at this point. There are other local marathons this fall if I'm dead set on marathoning this year. There is Indy in October and Indy Monumental in November.

For the marathon, I would probably lean more towards a later fall one that you could really prepare for. Especially since you said you really want to go for a PR. I've had some really good training runs when I'm really frustrated about something so many the canceled more will give you some extra training fire.

H did the Indy Monumental last year and really liked it. I ended up biking most of the course while trying to watch him. It seemed like a really well run event. I believe it's the same weekend as the marathon I'm trying for and the most I've done is 12 miles so you wouldn't be "behind" if you went for one that late in the fall.

Ugh, I'm so sorry things didn't work out at the end. I can imagine how emotionally exhausting this has been for you. On the bright side, doggy gets to stay with you and maybe you can still do the race? Oh and unlimited shipping from LLL!!!

I have to echo everyone else and say how sorry I am and how disappointing this all must be. A couple things that might help make you feel a bit better:

1) do the half. You can kick ass and get a new PR.
2) when my husband and I started this house buying process last month and it was all up in the air we told ourselves "if this house does not work out, we will take a break from looking and step away for about a year. But we will also take some of our savings and go knock an item off of our travel bucket list. So either way it will be a win win situation." Of course the house came through, but had it not, while it would have sucked, we would be able to knock the Grecian isles off our list and likely had a great time. So maybe a vacay? a mini vacay? you guys travel a lot, and just some way to release all of the tension that has built from this experience would be great.

I think you should run the half. you have time for a half PR but a marathon PR is probably a lonshot at this point.

The only thing happy about this information is Duke. Yay for not leaving Duke!! I'm really sorry about everything else though. I know how much you were looking forward to it, and I can just imagine how draining this all is.

Ditto everyone else on focusing on a strong half for the September race. However, now that you're not moving, could I interest you in a full in Savannah in November?
