OK this thread on my new BMB requires its own discussion. Basically the moms are wondering what to do about their guns now that their holsters won't fit any more. Also some people say they just keep the gun in their diaper bag. O.M.G wtf.
OK obviously this depends a ton on where you live. I grew up in a country where nobody had guns. Now I live in Massachusetts. So obviously I am agog at this new information that moms just walk around carrying guns on their person/in their diaper bags, going to parks and playdates.
What do you all think of this? especially those who live in Texas and other gun-loving places? Is this normal behavior from your perspective?
I think having a weapon in the home, under lock and key (preferably a bio-metric safe) is cool. BUT, I would freak out if I were at a playdate at say a park or whatever and I found out one or more of the moms were carrying a loaded gun! I mean, I basically would never hang out with her/them again, ever. No way.
So anyway, opinions? whats gun culture like in your area, in terms of carrying a weapon on the person?
I have always lived in the northeast so it is crazy to me to think that non-criminals just walk around with loaded handguns as part of everyday life. I would freak out if I knew a mom at the playground was packing.
Keeping a gun in a diaper bag freaks me the F out. Andrew used to go right up to my bag and go in looking for a snack or his cup. What if somebody had a similar bag and kept a gun in it?

WTH! No way I would carry guns in a diaper bag. That is just an accident waiting to happen. I know plenty of men that have guns here (DH and friends) but as far as I know none if their wives have guns on their own.

ETA: We do own guns but CC permits are hard to get in Maryland. H wants one, but if it was a real possibility, we'd have to have a serious discussion about it.

I'm in Mass and the town I teach in has a very high percentage of gun ownership. There was a poll done last year and something like 20% of the homes had at least 1 gun.
I personally think America's gun culture is sick. There is a reason no other modernized and industrialized nation owns guns the way and at the rate we do.

No. never.
And this coming from someone with uncles and friends who are cops, so I was around guns a lot. I felt safe around these particular people because of who they are, not the guns. None of them had children and as far as I know, once they did, the guns got locked away.
I don't think a parent of a young child should be around guns like that.
That is crazy. A gun should not be in a diaper bag, period. I would be seriously pissed, and would leave, if I went to a small kid function and any mom or dad was carrying.
In Kansas, that was not common or accepted where I lived.
Yeah I mean the thing is, are people picturing some kind of movie setting where everything will work out great and they'll save everyone with their amazing fast reflexes?
Also if someone came up and tried to grab your handbag do they deserve to die? If you stumbled upon a homeless man who was incoherent and stumbling towards you asking for change and you get scared, do they deserve to die?
I just feel that it would be pretty tough to find yourself in the situation where you are a)in a good position to shoot a person without risk of harming bystanders b)are fully sure this person intends to harm or kill you and/or your child and therefore must die c)you have the necessary skill to aim correctly and a non shaking arm
its incredibly hard to hit a moving target even for the skilled. Situations that people picture happening are just so unlikely I think. Much more likely a curious child will get their hands on your gun.

Did it specify hand guns? My mom hunts so she has a gun. And I can kind of understand having a gun in the house. It's just people walking around carrying hand guns that freaks me out.

Any and all automatic weapon. I dont really know enough about guns to know of those are all hand guns.

Yeah, diapers in gun bags. No way.
lol scratch that and reverse it.
We have guns, but my H keeps them in a safe and only has them to and from the gun range when he goes to shoot. Just walking around with guns makes me uneasy.

There is a large hunting culture in America. I am guessing the majority of people who have guns do some kind of hunting. I also see nothing wrong with keeping a gun at home for protection. The police in my town got their budget cut so bad that they don't even work a few days a week. So there is no one there to come to your aide in a hurry.
We have 5 police officers in our city. One is on disability. State cops can't come in to help because of jurisdiction "issues".

I grew up with guns, DH has several, but they are shot guns or rifles he inherited. Since I have known him they have not been loaded or shot. He wants a handgun, and I am totally okay with it. It would stay unloaded and locked up in our house, or taken out to go to the shooting range. It is easy enough to get a cc permit here, but he has no interest in that.
I cannot see a way for a mom to keep the gun safe in her purse or diaper bag, no way. I don't want Henry to get to my iphone, and just the other day he grabbed it and threw it on the ground before I noticed. He is quick, and LOVES to go through bags.
I hope these mom's change their minds before an avoidable accident happens.
A gun in a diaper bag? I think that must be one of the most irresponsible things I've ever heard. Just how stupid are these people?
What kind of scenario are they imagining? That someone is going to try to mug them and the person will just wait around while they dig for the gun at the bottom of the bag? The more realistic scenario is a mugger would just grab the whole diaper bag. So now, not only have they lost a wallet, but they've given a criminal a free gun.
And that's if the child doesn't find it and kill themselves or someone else with it first.
If I knew a friend was keeping her gun in her diaper bag, and after a good talking to, would not stop, I would not only stop being friends with her, but I would be very tempted to report her for child endangerment, especially if her child was old enough to get into things.
That's fucked up on so many levels. I also would not continue with a friendship if I knew someone was packing at a playdate. I'm in Texas, but in the burbs of Austin, so it's probably a much different culture in other areas of Texas. Where the hell are those women from where that is even remotely ok? I would get a woman thrown out of the moms group I am in if that information was disclosed.
I've heard of women carrying in their purse. I personally would never, because the risks are really high especially when you have little kids and they love to rummage through stuff. I know I've said this before, but my DH has his CCW so he can carry, and he does occasionally (not very often. Mostly when he remembers. He just likes having the option basically). So obviously I have a different opinion on the subject than most. But when he's not carrying, it goes straight into our locked safe in the back of our closet.

rjamz, I retract my offer to talk smack at your playground. Mean mommy bitches can have all the bubbles they want! :-)
Someone who carries a gun in their diaper bag is a fucking moron that would never be around my children again. They probably shouldn't be around any children quite frankly.
I have heard of women carrying in their purses also. We have a gun that is safely locked up in the garage, it is DH's but I don't allow it in the house. I would never with a diaper bag or in my purse if I had a kid, going through my purse is like Macy's favorite pastime. Our friends that have CCW carry with holsters so you never see them.

Maybe it's the people I am with, but no one I am friends with owns a handgun.
My Dad was a hunter, so we had rifles and hunting guns (?) in the house growing up, but I didn't even know where he kept them. (Probably where they hid our Christmas presents! Still have no clue to this day where they kept them)
Guns are so foreign to me. I want nothing to do with them.
I was at a wedding on Saturday and I guess a couple that like to CC was having problems with how to do so wearing dress clothes or something. My husband heard the convo, not me, but he kind of side-eyed and he loves his guns and hunting.
I would have to agree with whoever said that pepperspray > guns when protecting yourself.
