Going through every Jewish preschool on the Upper West Side (my neighborhood). The one I want him to go to is 4 blocks away. They only take 15 kids. Then there's the more religious one a bit further. Very expensive and I'm not sure that's the type of education I want my kid to have. But then again it's only preschool, how much of their philosophy would they really retain??
Then there's the excellent school that starts at 3. So I could send him to the more religious one for a year and then to the one that I agree with the next year.
Then there's the "American Israeli" preschool. Do I care about the fact that the teachers speak to them in Hebrew? It's nice. Is it $14,000/year nice?
Then I started looking at nonJewish preschools bc like I said before - will he really retain the teaching of the Jewish ones anyway?
I tried to convince my husband to pretend to be Jewish because it seems like there are more Jewish preschools around us than non.
Is one of the ones on your list Rodeph Sholom? I lived across the street from it when I was pregnant. The kids looked very well behaved there. The honking, horrid parents/drivers at drop-off? Not so much.

Yup, it's on the list. It's a reform school, but again, who cares? It's just preschool.

So is there no chance of him getting into the one that only takes 15 kids? You guys have to apply to several and sometimes well in advance, right? Ugh, I don't envy you. All I know is I would avoid paying $14k/year if at all possible. lol
Oh, there's a good chance he'll get into that one. I just don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

When is application day in NYC? Here it's November 15th. Some have paper applications that need to be postmarked that day and that day alone. Like NYC, you have to go to an open house to get it. Fine. Whatever. Other places only do their applications online, and they have to be done that day too. I think we'll get a sitter for Andrew so we can deal with all of the preschool bullshit and not have to ignore Andrew all day. And then we'll drink heavily and wait to see if he gets in ANYWHERE. Stupid preschools.

This really, really, really kills me that places other than NYC are like this. I thought I could escape.

It's not as bad if you're slightly outside of the city. There's just a lack of good preschools in town and I'd rather not have to drive 30+ minutes each way, in traffic, just to take him to school. This part of town has exploded with housing, restaurants, etc., and has become the new cool place to be. Unfortunately, good preschools haven't been built to meet the demand, so there are a lot more kids for a lot fewer spots than there have been in years past. Also, because of the cycle of this part of town, EVERYBODY has kids the same age. When the market exploded, young professionals moved here to take advantage of all the new real estate. They all got married after buying houses. And now they're all pro-creating. It's a mini baby boom.

Maybe it's an UO, but I really don't think that preschool before 3 is that big of a deal, be it whether they go or where they go, as long as they're safe obviously. Nobody around here does preschool until 3. Before that is just regular ol' daycare. I don't know if there's a difference in facilities, costs, etc., but I'm not even thinking about it for age 2. I did look into a few, but the ones I'm interested in don't even take until 3 anyway.
That being said, if it's your thing I could still never ever fathom paying 14,000 a year for a 2 or 3 year old! I am not jewish, so I can't give my input on specific schooling, but I can't imagine that a non-jewish preschool would be detrimental to them at that age.

Yeah, H agreed that we would apply to non Jewish ones also. But not the extra religious Jewish one, lol.

Here, the spots for three year olds are filled by the kids rising from the two year old program. With the hierarchy of admissions (Siblings, prominent church families, large monetary donations, kids who were wait-listed in the past), if you don't get in at two, there's no chance you'll get in at three. The decent daycares are the same way though. People get on the waitlists before they get pregnant.
I haven't even thought about preschool. Ok that's a lie. I've been considering checking out a Montessori school near where I plan to go to grad school. But no one around here takes kids under 3 so it right now it is purely curiosity.
There's a montesorri one in the same building as the Jewish one I want him to go to. I'm applying to both. If only they would merge!

Yea, same here. Which is why we are potentially screwing my child by not sending her at age 2. But I really, really, really, really, really want to move far away from here like the hour after I give birth.

You could move to Tallahassee. I'm pretty sure there are always spots open.
There are preschool spots open, but is there anything else to do there? (angel)

Come to Jamaica! A will be going to the best pre-school in Jamaica and his fees are about $3,200 per annum for 4 hours a day every day. And we'll be getting a discount as our friend runs the school. And they still have spaces available for this term. That's what happens in a poor country when a recession hits. However, I think you have to pay extra for the yoga classes...
Maybe I'm a terrible mom but I haven't even begun to think about preschool. I don't think I'll send him at 2 years old. I don't even know what schools are in our area.
rjamz - that's for the nouveau riche! Personally I see you more in this kind of a place (http://www.vlarealtors.com/mls/6513.aspx) - it's over 200 yers old so may need some updating but it has class. And it's also 1/10 the price.
But if the countryside scares you, this one might work better (http://www.vlarealtors.com/mls/4255.aspx). It's not too far from where I live and it even has a separate staff quarters - perfect for your night nanny!!
Hmmm, I suppose 12 guest houses is a tad tacky and gauche.
I love those houses! Oh man, I could live in tropical paradise, not pay too much for preschool. Do you have Jews in Jamaica?

We do indeed! Not a very large community, but a long established one (there is evidence of a synagogue here from before the end of the 17th century). They have purim at the beach. ucija.org/
Ugh I hear you. I'm looking at a French preschool, but they don't start until 2.5 and the child has to be potty trained, but I have to apply by December 1st this year. How do I know when she's going to be potty trained?? I almost just want to do the Waldorf 2's program, but it's over on the East side and will be a pain in the butt. Also, I feel like if Audrey grows up not knowing French she'll resent us for not teaching her. I dunno I dunno...

G will go to Mother's Day Out at a preschool here next fall. I'll probably enroll him in the 3 day a week program but just send him 2 days. I want to have the option to do a third day for childcare needs since it's cheaper than my nanny.
He'll start true preschool in the fall of 2015 at age 3. Two or three mornings a week with the option of extended afternoons with enrichment activities.
