I can definitely see the people who were directly touched by the day (people who live in the NYC/NJ/PA areas where the attack occurred or who had loved ones lost or involved) wanting to do something. As for the rest....it seems a little attention whore-y. But I feel that way about any FB memes surrounding any holiday or memorial.
No. I also agree that it is kind of annoying. EVERYONE remembers what happened this day, it's embedded in our minds forever. I don't need your picture of the twin towers with an American flag background and bald eagle crying to remind me.
I feel like 99% of the people who post that kind of thing really aren't spending any real amount of time memorializing what happened, they're just posting some random shit on FB because of the whole social media circlejerk "LOOK AT ME" culture, or guilt (BECAUSE THEY DID FORGET!) or because everyone else is doing it.
Does this mean I don't appreciate the people who risked their lives that day or that I don't give a damn about the people who lost theirs? Of course not. It just means I'm not attention whoring over a tragedy that happened 12 years ago.
I posted a picture of the ground zero lights that H took on Friday night. I responded to posts that family members made honoring other family members and fellow firefighters that were lost from their fire houses.
The "never forget" memes are dumb, but I don't judge people who post memories or reflections today. Especially those who were directly affected.

i have never seen a friend who lost someone/was there/was in the fire department/etc. post anything prepackaged. not once.

Maybe I'm just crotchety.
I'll be crotchety with you. A local radio station was doing a "where were you when you found out" this morning (which is in and of itself) - and this woman calls in and says "Yes, I do, actually". The "actually" made it sound like she thinks she's unique and that people actually don't remember!
No and I'm avoiding the TV/FB today because I'm just too hormonal to think about it all this year and the people my family and friends lost. I'll never forget and I don't need to be a tragedy whore on fb about it.
I definitely don't begrudge the people who were there/lost someone they loved or knew, or even just most New Yorkers from posting their memories or what have you. I don't even think discussing your memories/experience is bad, but just straight up posting the cookie cutter "NEVAR FORGIT" memes is just lame and tacky.

"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"

This is exactly what I wanted to say but you say it 100 times better.
I really hate these. I can't even exactly pinpoint why, except that it seems like it trivializes tragedy to post a fucking meme on social media alerting everyone to how sensitive you are.
OH MY GOD YES. THANK YOU.
There's also the "I remember that day so clearly because (and then the competitive part because I was closer than you were, I knew more affected people than you did, etc.)" one-upmanship that I can't deal with.
Also all I seeing is people trying to tie this to Obama, which I am like whaaaaa. Basically this is just another opportunity for Obama=Muslim which makes me all

Whoever does that is just dumb and should crawl back into their cave.
