My mom told me babies are always a size ahead and she is WRONG. My kid was in newborn for over 6 weeks and will likely be in 3 month stuff past her 3 month birthday.
I had no NB before she was born but ended up with about 6 sleepers, 8 onesies, and two or three "fancy" outfits and that was plenty.
My MIL told me to double age for size, but DS1 followed the sizes true to age til he was 1 yo. Then he slowed down, and is just starting to grow out of 2T at 3 1/2 yo. DS2 is growing faster, but still started out on the same track.

There's no way to know. Also, each brand runs differently. BRU and Gap tend to run small. Carters tends to run a little big. Gerber brand runs really small. Everyone told us that we wouldn't need any size newborn but we needed NB for at least a month. I wouldn't stock up on clothing until you decide what you like and what works for your kid. Different brands will fit better and different styles will be easier to deal with.
Lol. This is so untrue for my kids. They are just about 22 months. DS can still wear his 3-6 month shorts since he is a string bean with no ass. DS is wearing 18 months jeans today and they keep falling. Those guidelines work great for some kids, but definitely not mine!

DD was in newborn till she was around 2 mo. She will be 3 mo old next week and if it wasn't for the length, she could still fit in most of the newborn stuff now because she is very long and skinny.
We had about 6 onesies, 4 sleepers, 3 pants, and 2 nice outfits in newborn size. I did laundry a lot because I figured she'd grow out of them quicker than she did so I didn't want to buy more.
It varies from child to child. Ds is petite and was in newborn until almost 3months. He's 3 and currently wears 24mos in tops, and 2T in pants. My sisters son was always way ahead size wise.

DS was 8 lbs when he was born and he was still in NB sizes for at least a month. We didn't have enough newborn clothes because we figured he'd never wear them, so we had to make a few runs to Macy's for onesies. Plus they go through so many outfits a day at that age from poop and spit up!

My kid was in the corresponding size until about 12 months. He was also on the bigger side, 80ish percentile. My solution was to not buy too far ahead.
My kids are generally the size they are. So if they are 4 months, for example, they fit in 3-6 stuff. We buy mostly gap. All brands are different, though. It really just depends on how big your kid is.

My son was early, so he wore premie for 6 weeks or so.
Then he took off like a rocket and was always ahead of his age in sizing, now he has kind of evened out a little and he's wearing a size 4t/5t (he's just about 3 yo)
I agree- don't go too nuts at first, wait and see because sizing will even depend on whether your kid's size is in their legs vs torso, etc.
If you are going to get stuff, I suggest going to consignment shops or thrift stores. Kids are hard on clothes, and those are much more inexpensive options.
Also, wait until you really know what kind of style of clothes you like. With Henry I used a lot of onesie type tops paired with pants or shorts. I figured I'd do the same with Clare, but I really prefer one piece outfits on her.

How come the difference in preference between both kids?
Dunno. I just find pants a pain in the ass this time around. Also, I just prefer the look of one pieces on her.
There is no way to know. There just isn't. I was a smaller child and DH was a beast as a baby. DD is very petite and just now wearing 12m clothes (and still fits into some 9-12m clothes that run bigger) at 15 months. We have some things in 12m size that are too big! She wore newborn clothes for at least 2 months. It's frustrating and makes buying ahead difficult.
Harper was 8lbs 3oz and she never fit into newborn but did fit into 0-3. At 5 months she's in 6, 6-12 and 9 month sizes. I find brands to size very inconsistently. It's hard tk say how much you will need. What I will say is don't buy things just because they're cute. Buy only things you really love. I ended up buying stuff she grew out of before she could wear it.
i know H wears a lot of babygap/old navy. do you find their sizes to be consistent with each other and/or her age? most of the clothes i've bought so far are from those places, too.
I don't know about V, but I've found ON runs smaller than gap, and gap tends to run big.

Old Navy runs huge, IME, but BabyGap runs a bit more TTS. DD can wear her 12m clothes from Gap but is still in 9-12m from ON.

Unless your kid is on one end of the spectrum or the other (really teeny or really huge), then I think most clothing sizes are going to be pretty accurate for age. I'd have a few 0-3 month sleepers/onesies on hand, But I wouldn't stock up on ANYTHING until the baby is born and then go from there.
It's a crapshoot. O could've worn preemie when he was born (full term), so he was in newborn for probably six weeks or so, and then shot up to six months seemingly over night. Three month was a short lived time. Go with what EmilieMadison said.

B was in NB clothes for less than two weeks. At 3 months he was wearing 9 month onesies. At 9 months, he's now wearing 18 month clothing, but some of the pants are still long. All kids are different, so don't go too crazy with the clothes before you meet him and know his growth pattern, which will inevitably change when you think you've figured it out.
Don't go crazy with anything. I'd get a couple onesies and sleepers in newborn and 0-3 until your baby comes. Rosie was in preemie sized for 5 weeks and is about 8 weeks and in newborn. I think she'll still be in newborn for a couple more weeks, maybe a month, but I'm not sure.

DS was in newborn/premie stuff until he was 2 months (he was a tiny, full term baby), and we had almost nothing in that size, so DH had to run out to a local thrift store and buy outfits before we brought him home. We've gotten the most time/wear out of his 9 and 12 month clothes--he's just now starting to outgrow his 9 month onesies at 18 months.
We've found Carter's to be the most TTS, with Gymbo and Children's Place running long, and ON running big all over.
I'm trying to figure out how much baby clothes we should start with. This is probably a dumb question.
I was told that usually the age of your infant in months probably equals to twice the size. Like if your baby is 3 months old, he will probably be wearing 6 month old clothes, if he's 9 months then wearing 18 months old size.
Is this the way it is with your kids? I know each brand varies in sizes though. Like how gerbers usually run smaller.
Or how fast do they go through a size? I'm pretty sure the NB sizes will be short lived if used at all. What about the bigger sizes like 3m, 6m, 9m and even through 2T, 3T, etc?
Just would like to have an idea of what to expect.
This was not true for me. Of course it's going to depend on the child, but in my experience, my DD ran true to size. Her age has always coincided with the clothing size.
The only time there was guess work was when she was in the in-between sizes. At 3 months the child might fit into 0-3 or 3-6. It depends on the child and the garment.

FredSpaghed was 8lb5oz and wore NB for almost the first month. He's still in 6 month separates at 10months, but it's because he's super skinny. He's grown out of 12 month footed sleepers.
We are finding that Gap, Osh Kosh & H&M run huge on him. Old Navy fairly true to size, but are more short & squat, Gerber/George are crap and super short and extra wide. I've have friends find the opposite on their kids.
Sofia was pretty much right on with most clothes sizes. She's a bit of a peanut though. Like, she's 2.5 and 2T pants are still swimming on her, even with a bulky cloth diaper,
Theo's a wholllllle different story. Kid wore 3 months from the time he was a few weeks old, he's mostly in 9-12 months clothes now at 5.5 months.
Oh, and I didn't bother buying much of anything until he was born. I don't buy in advance even now because I just have no idea what size he'll be next month.
DS was 9 lbs 2 oz. I think double the size has been right for him. He's slowing down though, he moved up to 18 mo around 9 months and it still fits. He turns 1 year in a few weeks.
