Not from morning sickness, but I keep "messing up"!
I eat EVERYTHING. Even before I TTC I would eat the strangest things. I can eat an entire jar of green olives or pickles in one sitting. My husband calls me the human garbage disposal.
I keep stuffing my face and forgetting that I "shouldn't" eat whatever I'm eating. Like my husband had some left over turkey and cheese sandwiches in the fridge which were lunches he makes for work (snow days resulted in some extra this weekend). So I toasted one up and put a fried egg in it. I made sure to cook the egg through so the yolk wasn't runny....but when I was down to my last bite forgot that I shouldn't be eating deli meat. Doh!
The other day I was out and ordered a fancy grilled cheese - it had brie. I have no clue if it was made from pasteurized milk or not. Oops. But it was sooo good!
I suck at this. My ILs brought back some andouille sausage from Louisiana and I was going to make jambalaya with it tonight. I'm now looking up whether or not I can eat sausage. (can I? or are there too may nitrates?) I'm also a seafood whore so I have to remember to watch how much of that I take in per week.
I know having a few of these things in moderation won't be harmful, but it's the REMEMBERING that is killing me!
I did, however, remember that I can no longer clean the cat litter and that DH must do it That's an easy one! haha.
I'm overly cautious since I've had some failed pregnancies but I do know those guidelines are really just in case the food contains listeria or some other organism. Eating them won't guarantee an issue. I'm thinking I'm more lax that most people would be, though, even considering my anxiety over a possible m/c. I had a sip of DH's beer the other night. We are craft brew snobs and I love to taste new beers so I'm OK with a sip. People looked at me like I was nuts!
A few nights ago I made biscuits and I LOVE the taste of raw biscuit dough (see, I naturally have strange food cravings!) and I was picking out of the bowl. My husband nearly died and shouted "you can't eat that!" But there was no egg in the recipe so I knew it was safe. I really need to remind myself, though, if I do make a batter with egg.
I'm going to break soooo many food rules! I love to eat!
I've been pretty good about remembering, though I hate heating deli meat but I had a salad with blue cheese dressing last night and I'm pretty sure that's a no-no. Oops.
i've kept to things in moderation. the other night i opened a pack of cheese we had had laying around for a bit. cut some up, then read the label and see it's made with raw milk. oops. it was a hard cheese though, not soft, so i did some googling and hard raw milk cheeses are rated way at the bottom for the FDA's list of 'foods with dangerous listeria levels', even worse than produce. so i was like, eh, i'm fine. the other cheese was a brie i made sure was pasteurized milk when i bought it. of course i had all this with a half of glass of wine that i drank over three hours, so clearly i'm not particularly concerned about that rule either!
I've eaten all of those things in both pregnancies, if it occurs to me I try and avoid it (at least in the 1st tri) but I forget the food rules all the time - but I'm pretty laid back in general. I wouldn't stress

I'm finding myself much more laid back about these things my second time around (as I'm sitting here eating a turkey wrap). My H admonished me a week or so ago not to taste the raw cookie dough when I was baking but I snuck a bite after he left the room. I think pregnancy is hard enough without obsessing over everything that goes in my mouth. I'm all about moderation.
I've been pretty good about remembering, though I hate heating deli meat but I had a salad with blue cheese dressing last night and I'm pretty sure that's a no-no. Oops.
Good grief it never even occurred to me that blue cheese dressing could be an issue. I eat a ton of it.
So I still planned on making the jambalaya tonight with the andouille sausage and my MIL called inviting us over for dinner. She told DH she was making jambalaya with the same sausage they just brought back and I was thinking how cool, I was going to make that! Now DH is all like "She can't eat sausage!"
I keep telling him it's FINE and as long as it's cooked nice and hot I can eat it and he keeps giving me this worried "I don't knooowww" glance. MIL then said she didn't want to make it b/c the spices might upset my stomach and I'm telling her NO , IT'S OK I WAS GOING TO MAKE IT TONIGHT FOR US! AND - I'm not even having indigestion issues yet!!
This is so annoying. I WANT SOME JAMBALAYA DAMNIT! Why do people assume they know what's best for me? I'm going to stay home and cook some for myself!
I am confused as to why anyone thinks you can't/shouldn't eat andouille sausage.
Honestly I would eat most of the things you mentioned without thinking twice. Unless you are buying cheese at a gourmet market or eating off of a cheese plate at a fancy restaurant, it's almost certainly pasteurized and therefore not a problem at all.

Don't worry, I've probably eaten a gallon of blue cheese dressing so far. Anything commercially prepared is made with pasteurized milk, so I'm not worried.

This. Although I feel like it's more laid back in the UK than in North America in terms of what you can't have. I'm supposed to stay away from cured deli meats (like prosciutto) but cooked deli meats like turkey and ham are fine. If I remember to avoid it, I do, but I've had the occasional bit of brie or salami. I've been decent about not eating sushi so far. The only thing I refuse to do is eat my steak well done - I mean, why ruin a perfectly good cut of meat?

I don't know!!! lol.
I know there is a no-no rule for hot dogs (and that's even not a ban, as long as you eat them piping hot!) so when MIL gave us the sausage yesterday DH goes "can you eat that?" and I said I would have to look it up. I did look it up and it's safe as far as listeria goes but I'm guessing nitrates can be an issue - but that's a moderation thing like mercury in fish.
But now everyone is coming up with restrictions for me for some reason! When I say "It's OK" everyone's not believing me. What gives?

I've decided to just forgo steak until the baby comes. I told DH that's going to be my first meal: surf and turf as in a bloody rare stake with sashimi. I guess I could eat it but DH is all up my butt about sausage right now..so....

I obsess over this, too. I'm so paranoid! I've been dying to eat blue cheese dressing & dip, but feel guilty... It's on my list of questions for the doctor. I need blue cheese!
Hot dogs are a no-no?? The only thing I've abstained from is alcohol, although I've had some sips here and there. Seriously, the last major listeria outbreak was from cantaloupe, which caused one miscarriage. Your chances of getting something harmful to your pregnancy from food are so incredibly low.
i forgot about hot dogs too, until i was biting into my second mini corndog yesterday at lunch. oops. i'm not worried though.
DH has been basically backing up my 'in moderation' plan but is weird about raw fish/sushi and lunch meat. i have no idea why it's those two things. he's encouraged me to take sips of his beers and have a small glass of wine since i've hit the second trimester but i mention wanting a sandwich and he's all "well you really shouldn't do that if they tell you not too". whatever, dh, whatever.
If the cheese is cooked, it doesn't matter whether it was pasteurized. Also, my doctor never said a word about sausage nor shrimp. The seafood to avoid is big fish with high mercury content, e.g., mackerel and tilefish. I have never eaten any of the fish on the high-mercury list.

I had a rare steak on Valentine's Day. YUM. They are not a common source of listeria infection.

We're around the same time - I'm 5 weeks, too. Is this your first? I'm assuming at first everyone is overly paranoid.
Most of the issues are because of listeria concerns. I told DH just now "we've been eating this stuff for YEARS and none of us have had a listeria issue".
It is rare but I guess the idea is better safe than sorry. If you abstain your chances of getting a food-born illness is 0%.
But everyone keeps treating this like I'm chugging a fifth of vodka or something. Eating these foods (like sushi and soft cheese) just increases the CHANCES of possibly getting an illness, it does not cause birth defects and miscarriage directly like alcohol might (which in itself is not harmful in small doses).
I already knew I was going to be so bad at following food rules. I'm SO GLAD so many of you were/are so lax on them. Makes me feel better. No I have to convince DH it's OK.

Yup, this is my first. I'm hoping I loosen up once I go to the doctor and see/ hear that everything is fine.
I want steak and baked brie now. I would totally eat them both; I'm just too lazy to go to the store. Lol
OP, make your own calls and tell people to stuff it. Oh also, my dr said 2x daily colace for constipation plus lots of fluids, and miralax if you get really uncomfortable.

Thanks for the colon update!! I'll check out the miralax. I've got a Dr. apt tomorrow to check out my GI issues. My mom has diverticulitis, dad has IBS, and younger brother is currently being tests for possible crones so our whole family always had issues. I had them as a kid but they seem to be returning now. Leave it to hormones to bring out the worst in us!
Also, I'm having issues drinking water today to stay hydrated. It tastes HORRIBLE and makes me sick to "smell it". I never knew water had an odor. WTF, is this what that morning sickness is all about? I was thinking that maybe I was not going to get it.
I've had jambalaya on my mind all day and if MIL changes her dinner plans b/c DH made a stink about sausage, I'm going to be so annoyed! I'm not in the mood for chicken.

As breezy as I am about sushi/rare steak, etc. I do watch out for sources of listeria. The reason is twofold: (1) pregnant women are 20x more likely to get listeria than other healthy adults and (2) pregnant women can pass the infection to their unborn babies without knowing it. I've never had a listeria infection either, but IMO now is not the time to eat foods that are known for being HIGH listeria risks (deli meat and unpasteurized soft cheeses). I am not going to quit eating raw fruit because, though it can carry listeria, I've never seen it listed as a high-risk food. Source
There is lots of fear-mongering out there on what is safe during pregnancy, and I don't want to contribute to this at all. I think that some sources would have you believe that you should be locked up in a padded room only eating chicken soup for nine months, while I have continued to go about my business normally for the most part. But my understanding of listeria is that it behaves differently from most other foodborne pathogens in that it crosses the placenta. Most species of salmonella, for example, don't cross the placenta. This is why I'm unconcerned about eating sushi, for example.
I'm not a physician, and I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do. But my personal comfort level, based on reading I have done, is to avoid the most common sources of listeria. That's about all I've been avoiding besides alcohol. It's up to everyone to determine her own comfort level, but I cringe when I see someone say "I've been so bad, I ate a steak that was cooked medium rare!" because I've just never seen research that suggests this is a risky behavior.

I know the feeling. I've had queso, feta and sushi. And I try to remember the seafood only twice a week. It's tough to have restrictions on your food. Lol
Thanks rbp. I'm thinking I may need to add some flavor or something to water for now on. I'm going food shopping tomorrow and will pick up some. How about that MIO additive to water? But today is the first time I had this and water seems to be the only thing making me feel sick. That and I now have a strange taste in my mouth that I do not like.
Subway was pretty much a staple for me the last part of my 1st and most of my 2nd trimesters. I also am pgal and was fairly cautious and nervous because of it but damn, all I wanted was Subway!

I would do lemon or Pom juice or something before MIO since it's made with artificial sweetener. That's one thing I'm a stickler on. I eat soft cheese, prosciutto (from a reputable source/deli that I trust), blue cheese dressing, but still avoid commercial lunch meat. If I want a turkey sandwich, I'll get fresh roasted turkey breast instead of pressed turkey meat.
