I wear running shoes to work errrry day. I had been really happy with my Brooks until the last year or so. The quality has turned to absolute shit and if I'm going to spend over a hundred dollars on a pair of shoes, they need to not fall apart. We have a local running store, which is where I got fitted for the Brooks, but I have weird feet- neutral flat foot. Does anyone a. happen to have a similar foot or b. at least know a brand that isn't going to fall apart so fast.
How long did you have your brooks? What fell apart?
The first pair I had for 3 weeks before my toes all busted through. Brooks replaced them for free, which was great. But the second pair started doing that again after only a couple months and I'm just kind of over it
Rule #1 with running shoes is only wear them when your actually running (not "around" like regular sneakers). I actually get ugly ones to make sure I'm not tempted to wear them unless I'm running -- well, not "ugly" ugly but bright colors that I can't pull off in normal clothes.
Seriously though, running shoes last a certain number of miles, so wearing them for anything other than running just wastes mileage. Having said that, I've gotten good mileage out of Saucony. New Balance always fell apart on me. Everything else was sort of average.

Maybe a dumb question…but do you keep your toenails short? Have you tried going a half size up from your normal shoe size? In a running shoe you want to make sure you have a little more room because your feet swell when you run.

I was fitted at a professional running store. It was a production issue with Brooks, which is why they were replaced.

I agree with this. Running shoes are made to support your feet while running, not while walking, standing, etc. I would go back to the local store and tell them how you plan to use the shoes and see what they can recommend.

LOL @ running
I don't run
wasting mileage is definitely not an issue
Okay, then dumb question number 2 -- why buy an expensive running shoe if you're not actually running? A cross-trainer should be just as comfortable, maybe MORE comfortable, and might not cost as much. And should last longer. A running shoe might only get you 250 miles. Assuming you're taking 10,000 steps a day, that's almost 5 miles, which means you'd be replacing running shoes about every 50 working days, or 2.5 months….I'd probably go with a different kind of shoe if it were me.
Also, I cheat. I get fitted at a running store and buy the first pair there, then order subsequent pairs from Zappos -- usually you can get the exact same shoe for several years (though they might be different colors/patterns).

I didn't buy shoes specifically for running. I bought what was comfortable. I have a neutral flat foot, which is already weird, and it took 7 surgeries to repair my left ankle. I'm not starting from normal here.

I think it would be a better idea to get a sneaker with stability ( cross trainer) if you don't actually run in them. It doesn't matter if you've been fitted for a running shoe if you're just using it to walk around. Running shoes lack the stability that you need day to day walking around, they're really just supposed to be worn when running.
If your toes are consistently busting through, then you don't have a good fit. Did you size up? Typically most people need at least half, many times a full size larger in running shoes. My brooks are 9.5, my normal shoes are 8-8.5.

I wear Mizuno Wave Riders. I've had four pairs of Mizunos, and each lasted a year of hard running, so I've never had quality issues.
You'd have to go see what style fits your foot though.
And I'll add that my shoes are great for running, but my feet and knees hurt if I wear them for a day of walking. Running shoes aren't usually actually all that great for not running.
again, this is a known production issues with Brooks. Which is why I am asking about other brands. I have been fitted and sized and I am not unhappy with anything other than the quality of the brand.
I feel like @misoangry in here. I need to try a nipple shield.

That's why I left brooks. Their quality is just awful anymore. I found mizuno and newton were close to the fit and comfort I found in brooks different type dhoe but sane type of fit i had. Also ryka xt support my foot like brooks did. I miss old brooks quality

thank you, I'm going to look into these and the other brands mentioned in here
I love my Saucony running shoes - I'm not a flat/neutral, but I bet they make some for that foot type. I loathe and despise New Balance, but I think I have a weird back ankle setup - they come up too high, or something.
I also think a good cross trainer may work for you. I have some Nike crosstrainers that I love, they're super cushioned and have a little more lateral stability that my runners. They are NOT fashion forward, however.
ETA - I've heard Newtons are awesome, the woman who teaches one of my fitness classes raves about them.

Good luck. Finding a new shoe is the worst. I went thru many before I found my sweet spot shoe :-)

I also had quality issues with my Brooks. I switched over to Mizuno and haven't regretted it.

LOL. I was like, "Why have I been tagged in a thread about running shoes?!"
But. BUT!
While the info is a tad old, I can actually sort of help! I also have flat feet! And I blogged about my running shoe fitting experience!
