My husband works a manual labor job that he gets dirty in, so I wash all of his clothes separately. He also wears two sets of clothes a day. That said, I still only do 3-4 a week. Underwear/socks/work out clothes, DH's work clothes, everything else (sometimes separated into 2 loads). Sheets are every 2 weeks and towels as needed.
Agreed. Sheets go in with everything else; I have no idea why they'd need their own load.
I do sort, but only lights and darks, and I only do a load when my huge machine is crammed full. I hate doing laundry. Or, more accurately, I hate folding and putting it all away.
Whenever I wash my sheets with regular clothes, the clothes get all twisted up inside the sheets and don't dry properly.
Dude how small is your washing machine. We have a pretty small washer and it still can fit a couple queen sheets, towels, pillow cases, etc. I just shove it all in there.

It is so annoying. I can fit one sheet, 2 pillowcases and a couple t shirts If I put both sheets, there are parts that dont get wet.
When we moved here, I had no idea such a tiny machine existed.
Based on +v+'s poll, it looks like I have a much lower tolerance for dirty clothes and linens than most people. The thought of sleeping on the same sheets for two weeks straight grosses me out and there's no way we could use a kitchen towel for a week. We don't use paper towels, so we sometimes go through three or four kitchen towels a day.
We don't use paper towels either. What do you use the kitchen towels for?

I guess I don't think of a kitchen towel as a substitute for a napkin. I'm thinking more of the towels that I dry my hands on after washing dishes, and the one I wipe crumbs off the counter with. I use those both all week unless there is a big cleanup that I used them for.

Mine washer is yes, I do not have a dryer. I live in London. The washer is also in my kitchen.
I do about 4-5 loads a week. If I was in the US I would do many 2-3. When I wash the sheets we got for our wedding I have to wash the sheets in two different loads because they take up so much room in the tiny washer. They are both flat sheet because the sheet size is different here.
I don't think it's always about the size of the washer/dryer. Some people (me) don't have that many clothes and need to wash every 10-14 days before they're out.
DD can easily go 2+ weeks without a load of clothes.
I do a lot of loads at once but I only do it once a month. I hate doing laundry. The only reason why my sheets go in a load by itself is because I put in 2 king sets that fills up one load. Though the last time I washed my clothes with my sheets, I found underwear falling out of the rolled up parts of the sheets while I'm trying to fold the sheets. Very annoying.

Then you're an over-sorter. I have two baskets and a diaper pail. When any get full, I wash them. The end.
The idea that everything needs to be sorted out and done with a very similar bunch of stuff is from when Grandma needed enough laundry to keep her busy all of Monday.
I agree. I feel like that thread is a great reminder for when I get baby fever. 10 loads of laundry? No thanks.
There is no way that we will go from 1-2 loads to 10 loads if we have a baby. I'd rather just buy it a crapton of clothes.
You definitely won't need to go from 2 to 10. We did 2 loads a week before having kids and do 5-6 loads a week now with two kids. When it was just us and one baby we were doing maybe 3-4 loads. 10 loads is insane.
We don't do a lot of laundry (and that poll freaked me out), but I am a sorter. I have an issue with certain things mixing. (Don't worry I'm the same way with some foods, so I know it's me, lol!)
But I can go 2 weeks w/o touching the washer/dryer and then it's only b/c I'm doing our sheets and towels (which yes, are 2 separate loads).
Seriously, the kids generate so much laundry. And I also use cloth diapers, cloth napkins, cloth rags, etc. And we both work out. And DH uses two pairs of boxers every day. And we change after work. And I'm fucking clumsy so I can rarely re-wear because I stain all my clothes.
I'm not saying we have entire loads of kitchen towels, just that things like that around the house add up. We use them for everything in the kitchen, scrubbing the counters, draining bacon grease, wiping out the fridge, you name it. Those go in the wash with other towels and rags, usually two or three loads a week with the dogs factored in (paw wiping, bathing, drool cleanup).
I don't see my laundry as a problem. It just is what it is.
ETA: I don't always wait for big loads of laundry to accumulate, particularly when we've got funky kitchen or dog laundry. It goes in the washer right away with whatever else needs to be washed. I'd rather run a small load than have that stuff sitting around.
I don't use paper either. Some towels get tossed right into the hamper after one use and some that are just drying dishes could make it a week before I toss it.
Though those never really create a load, just add to what we have. It seems I wash 5-10 kitchen/cleaning towels in each load.

I have the same thing (darks and lights). I just don't have that many clothes- 3 jeans and maybe 12-15 t-shirts, which are for work and play!

I dont get it. Seriously, I dont. If I washed clothes every day for my family of 4, the washer would only be, like, 1/8 full for each load. And our washer and dryer are just regular front load sized. Not huge.
We have five people in our house and we do five or six loads a week. That's clothes for five people, linens for four beds, towels, etc. We do have a high capacity machine so I guess it would be a lot more if we had a standard size.
Luckily I do very little of the laundry myself. The nanny does most of it.
Hey my baby has a lot of clothes and I am a dirtbag that would let his dirty clothes sit 2 to 3 weeks before washing. But you try having an OCD husband that goes through hampers "checking" for dirty clothes. He gets so bitchy if they start stockpiling, he just thinks it's gross <eyeroll>. It's a sickness, I really believe this.
My washer must be tiny. I only put one set of queen sheets in at a time. I feel that if stuff is really crammed in there, it doesn't get as clean. It needs space to agitate.
I have an old-ish top loader though. I wonder if front loaders would hold more?
I don't get it either. When I had DD my load amount didn't increase all that much. 1 - White load 1-2 - Dark Loads 1 delicate load 1 - towel load... so max per week 5. I do sheets twice a month but often they can be added to the white load since it's usually a small load.
I do think the fact that people sort it makes for more laundry. I just do a load as I see enough to wash throughout the week. I cram that sucker.
Though I can also wash a set of sheets with a huge load of clothes so the whole sheet load is baffling to me.
heck, I washed other items with my down comforter at times.
I don't understand why people care enough to separate by color. As we're loading the machine we make an attempt to divide our roughly 2 loads on weekends by dark/kind of light. It's not a science, though.
Once in a blue moon... like once a year, I will do one load of white items, and double was them with bleach.
