Anyway, DH called (after emailing, wtf dude like that was going to work), and nicely spoke to a rep. He managed to get $10 off our bill for 3 months, and $50 off NFL ticket.

I'm thinking of doing the same, although our contract is up 9/10 and wonder if discounts would have any affect on that expiration date - we want to stay with them, but get a better rate like what we have for year 1 of 2.
Does everyone that has called and gotten discounts have several months left in their contact?

I don't know if this works with DirecTV (we have Comcast) but whenever we see an advertisement for a better deal with a competing provider, we call and ask them to meet their competitor's price. It's gotten more difficult over the last few years, but my SO is good about moving up the chain and getting someone on the phone who can help us. I think its worth the 30 minutes or so for the reduced price.
Jenni - I think it is absolutely worth your time to call as your contract expires pretty soon and I'm sure they want to lock you in for another contract.

I'll have to get H to call & bitch.
When we got home from vacation I realized that half of our favorites are Viacom channels. We've been getting irritated all over again every time we go to watch something and we get that stupid screen saver. And we've found that some of our non-Viacom channels have disappeared. We lost one ESPN channel. WTF is that about?
We've been thinking about getting NFL tickect, so I think I'll make the call.
The only channel we really miss is Nick Jr for the kidlet. Thankfully, they've added Disney Jr. and now the boy loves Doc McStuffins.
H was peeved when he got the email saying we get Disney Jr to "make up" for Nick Jr. From across the house you could hear "There' no Fairly Odd Parents on Disney!"
Ugh bastards! I just tried calling and it keeps automatically transferring me to dumb Century Link since we bundle our bills through them! And we already pay for the stupid Encore channels so that is a freaking joke. I resorted to yelling at them on their facebook page so I can go to lunch
$50 off the NFL package is nothing. Last year they gave it to us for $5/month just for being loyal customers. The year before we got it free. I don't think that was a very good deal that they gave him.
None of the channel losses affect me, so quite honestly I couldn't care less.

I'll call tonight and see where that gets me. DH watches Spike every once in a while. I am not going to admit that I miss MTV and all it's mind melting debauchery. cough cough but i do cough.
I did notice recently it doesn't seem like we get a lot of channels and we have the highest package minus HBO and the like.

Perhaps it's been around awhile but I first noticed on Breaking Bad last night a commercial saying, basically, 'Just a heads up! Breaking Bad ain't on DirecTV'. Kinda weird.

Care to share what makes you so awesome that you got it for free? Or do you just want to rub it in our face that DirecTV loves you?
Am I reading the implication correctly that people pay over $100/mo for football?!
Yes. ETA: No, I mean. It's $200 (?) for the whole season.
There's one channel that makes me ADD freakout because there's a channel that switches to the game that has something going on, so you're watching several games all at once.
DH really liked it because he got to watch all the games from his team, vs. the handful that usually air here.
I just called. Initially they offered me $5 off for three months. I went up the chain and got $15 off for 6 months. Then I went up the chain again because the new subscriber price is so much lower than what I pay and got $20 off per month with a new one year agreement. Combined with the $15 off, I'm at the new subscriber rate for 6 of those months, which is what I was aiming for. $330 in savings over the course of the year!
Oddly enough, I actually took a totally nice, sweet approach. It just took some patience though to wait through all the call transfers. Once I reached the right person, they acquiesced rather quickly. They must be worn down from all the people calling to cuss them out!

I'm not rubbing anything in anyone's face, I'm telling her that they can (and should) do better than $50 off. We've been with them for 10 years so maybe some of it is loyalty, but when they were going through the new rate restructures, they gave us the NFL package for free to compensate for it. Last year I have no idea why they gave it to us for $5/month. They called us and offered that and free premier channels through February 1st. We took it. Who wouldn't?
I think you should ask for more than just $50 off the NFL package.

I just called and got $15 off for the next 6 months, plus the HD Super Pack (whatever that is) for 3 months. I guess it's better than nothing, but it still doesn't bring back Snooki or Pranked.
Wait - what's happened?? I've been without tv since last Tuesday when we moved, although they're coming tomorrow to hook it up again. There are channels missing? Please explain.

they couldn't make a deal with viacom so all those channels are off.
or, as i like to say, i lost comedy central and a couple of other shitty channels i never watch.
