However, I think it's because I was there when it was hot as hell and I wasn't with the right people. As a huge history buff I was actually surprised how little I enjoyed it. I'm willing to give it another chance.

Rome and Florence. I was there after Holy Week so that probably added to the overall crowds but both cities were mobbed but especially Florence. I also traveled that entire week with a girl from my study abroad program who I ended up hating...we had done some day trips together and were fine but a whole week, terrible idea! I was sad by how disappointed I felt considering that Italy was always a country I had dreamt about visiting (as a teen I loved movies like A Room with a View and Roman Holiday). This is going on 10 years ago and I definitely want to return for a different experience especially since I wouldn't have to stay in a gross hostel in the not so flattering Termini area!
For me it was Prague. I really wanted to like it, but I think I just picked the wrong time of year to go. It was overrun with school groups and I couldn't escape the hordes of teenagers.
Rome (I am glad I've seen it, but not anywhere I need to linger!) San Francisco (though I do love wine country) Washington DC (if that's somewhere everyone loves)
I'm also not big on NYC. I live a modest train ride away, and come with reasonable frequency to visit my friends who live there. It's interesting, I suppose, but I wouldn't choose to visit if they weren't there and don't enjoy it for its own sake. I just like seeing my friends. I also find some New Yorkers' attitudes grating - the ones who are so convinced that NYC is the greatest place in the world that they can't understand that not everyone feels that way. Different strokes, that's all -- Like pretty much everywhere else, NYC is not so objectively wonderful as to overcome all differences in preference.
This is still my favorite trip that we've taken. Am I remembering correctly that you don't love Thailand because it felt too touristy for you? You prefer Laos? Or am I thinking of another poster? Explain yourself!
Another vote for Rome. I think it was a combination of a shady hotel, and being the last city on our trip and we were exhausted. I might like it better if I gave it another chance, but there are many more places in Italy Iw ant to hit up first.
My jaw is dropping at all the Rome replies. I studied abroad there so it's my favorite city in the world!!
I don't know that I've really been anywhere disappointing. Maybe Portland? Which I blame completely on the fact that my brother was a horrible tour guide (he lived there at the time).

Another vote for Vegas. I could not find any place quiet and relaxing and it was a week of near-constant information overload. DH had enough without ever leaving the airport!
Adding New York for similar reasons.
And Sydney, NSW. It's just a big city. I really was not impressed with it, especially compared to Adelaide and Melbourne.
Maui. I mean, your worst day on Maui is probably still better than your best day a lot of places, but it's my least favorite Hawaiian island. No local character, just tourists and mainland transplants and big resorts.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain

Man, I can't believe all these Rome answers either. I loved Rome, didn't like Florence at all. It was hot, crowded, touristy and smelled like a combo of garbage and sewage the whole time we were there.

See hot, crowded, and touristy was exactly how I found Rome. I do want to try again in the fall or something. It's just not very high on my list.
Granted, I was only there for 1 day on a layover. However, I never really had a desire to go there and after being there for the day, it solidified my thoughts. Seems like a cool city, but nothing to get too excited about to spend my money and vacation time there.

I love London but it is definitely not for everyone. If you are a big museum person they do have some good ones and you need days to visit some on them but damn its expensive!!!! It does make a good lunch layover stop- macarons and Laduree and Peri Peri chicken at Nandos

Prague, but I think I went at a bad time and am more than willing to give it another chance some day.
Germany. I love beer, schnitzel, and pretzels, but I'd rather enjoy those things in Austria where I found people to be much friendlier.
Chicago. I should also probably give Chicago another chance, but I doubt I'll go out of my way to do so anytime soon. Especially since I hate O'Hare so much.

This is one of those things everyone raves about that I'm "MEH" about. It's okay, but nothing I'd go out of my way to get. In fact, it's nothing I don't go out of my way to get -- as there are Nando's in Melbourne.

My closest one in on the other side of the US! I love chicken and spicy things and I really like their different sauces. I only get to have it when I travel. Im sure if I had one locally I wouldnt be that excited about it
Anywhere in Florida. The hot weather and potential for hurricane activity make me okay with never going back there if I don't have to.
YES!!! My IL's moved to Florida and they talk about it with such excitement and then want to know why we aren't visiting every other month. Well, it costs me a ton of $$ to get there, it is hot as hell, and they don't live near the beach. I'll make the obligitory trip once a year and your son can come visit whenever he wants.

I am fortunate to have a Laduree 10 minutes away, but whenever I go to London or DC I make sure to go to Nando's at least twice. WHY WON'T THEY COME TO NEW YORK???

Come down to Annapolis, MD! There is a Nando's at the mall.

This thread made me check and there is a Nando's near my house and they're opening another, more convenient, location in the fall. I know what we're having this weekend!
