False. I think you're thinking of North by Northwest, which still doesnt suck, but isn't as good as Vertigo.
Vertigo definitely sucks. DH and I watched a bunch of Hitchcock movies. The only thing that was actually good was Rear Window.
Wait seriously? Notorious is one of the best movies ever. And even though it is so cliched and overrated NOW, psycho is still awesome. Rear Window is of course one of his best but he did a lot of good stuff.

We didn't get to Notorious.
Psycho was TERRIBLE! The end has no big chase like every.other.Hitchcock film for some reason. And the entire plot is explained by a psychiatrist? WTF? Show not tell. It was like he forget everything he had done decently in other movies.
Vertigo was stupid, but as least the plot was revealed in a normal fashion.

I saw The Birds on TV when I was a kid and it freaked me the FUCK out.
This is true. And while it doesn't hold up as well overall as Golden Girls, Murphy Brown was way more overtly feminist than the bullshit we're fed on network sitcoms now. Murphy Brown >>>> Claire Dunphy (and I LIKE Modern Family. It's just brain candy).
I FUCKING HATE CLAIRE DUNPHY. She is a harpie shrew. And Phil is an overgrown child. They are Everybody Loves Raymond. I hate them.
I used to love Julie Bowen too, but is it just me or has playing Claire Dunphy too long made her a terrible actress? I feel like she's just overselling it all. the. time now and it's unwatchable.
I think the problem with Hitchcock to the modern eye is the same problem that I explained with A Clockwork Orange.
You have to remember that the censors didn't allow a lot of overt viewing of shit, and only casual or offhand mention of other things. To an audience without Silence of the Lambs, Law and Order, Fatal Attraction, or really the 80's and onward, Hitchcock is shocking and suspenseful. To the rest of us, it feels anti-climatic and unfinished.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
We STILL watch this at our house. Is there jack on? No Adventure Time/Avatar/Total Drama on the queue and the kids are up. It's either Cosby Show or Living Single.
We are living SINGLE! Oooh, in a 90s kind of world, I'm glad I've got my girls!
Golden Girls and Designing Women were my FAVORITE SHOWS. Also, Dallas.
I also loved A Different World... Whitley, Dwayne Wayne...love. For some reason, I loved Whitley even though she was kind of a jerk, IIRC. She was my favorite.
Because she was fashionable. And I think she was only a jerk for like half of the series.

And, along those lines, you have to understand just how movies were made back then - the acting, the lighting, that kind of thing. It was a different kind of filmmaking than what is done now. Also, again, this comes back to history and that kind of thing. Hitchcock was shocking because he was one of the first to do a lot of stuff, and its easy to forget that. Being attacked in the shower, with the blood going down the drain? that seems so tame now and so, well, "been there, done that." But at the time, it wasn't. So when you watch an old movie with modern eyes, you have to consider those things.
Apparently, the scene in Notorious where Bergman and Grant were making out in the wine cellar was scandalous bc there was so much kissing for such a long time, so they had to add in all those little snippets of conversatoin to get it past the censors, LOL.
@julesf - what didnt you like about West Wing? the politics? It is always pretty left leaning but they bring on a Republican character in season 2 that does a lot to help balance it a bit.

The censor rules and how filmmakers worked to get around them is sooooooo fascinating to me. Apparently, you could kiss but not for too long however, you could get around the length if you broke it up with words. So that's why in older movies, they're all having breathless conversation and doing this awkward pause kisses. It's also why the 30s and 40s and such have those laid out kisses where her hair all moves about and he's got her laid over his elbow. Because then, you can't see the lips and you can get a longer kiss in.

And until this thread I didn't realize that Kim K was peed on in her sex tape. Because I never watched it.
In FACT, I've never seen a single celebrity sex tape, except for the short blurred out excerpts that show up on E news or the like. I have no interest in watching celebrities have sex.
Oh! This I'd s good one, I've never watched any sex tapes.
OMG, I loved Murphy Brown. I remember when there was that stuff with Dan Quayle. Yay, Indiana. He came and spoke at my school. Gag.
Anyway, MH loves Modern Family, which I think is weird, because he typically hates all sitcoms. It's baffling to me. The man hates Friends, and thinks so many shows are incredibly unfunny. He's one of those Seinfeld fans. But he loves Modern Family...I think it's because of Phil and Luke though. They are such dorks I think he identifies with them.
Neither did I actually. I thought I was missing something fabulous but nope, I could have skipped that. Well, not completely. Chunk is what makes the milkshake scene from Family Guy extra hilarious.
Good Italian girl that I am... but I married somebody who's never seen The Godfather.
that ain't right
And you haven't fixed this???
But I love Goodfellas and Casino. ALL DAY LONG, BABY!
QFT
eta: on the fixing it part... when we first got married we started working our way through the AFI 100, most of which I'd seen and he hadn't (because I'm a movie junkie and he's not). But it was back in the day of Netflix discs, so it was taking forever, then we bought a house that needed work and had kids who need work an we haven't finished them up (we were going 100-to-1, so the Godfather movies would be later)...
I need to sit him down and make him watch, but the lack of them in streaming makes it bitchy. Andplusalso the fact that they're not exactly kid-friendly fare.
All things horror related. I have never seen a single horror movie. I scare far too easily and just don't go there on principle. Like, the Haunted Mansion at Disney World is borderline too much for me. Vampires, zombies, mummies, werewolves...nope.

Chunk was Cal's student president when he attended.
I still think Twin Peaks is good! If you like David Lynch, it's good. (My brother recently watched it for the first time and said that he just thinks he doesn't like David Lynch very much.) Well, it's good until you find out who killed Laura Palmer, then it goes down hill.
I hate the Golden Girls.
I have never seen Gremlins.
I hate the Goonies.
I have never seen the West Wing.
You know what sitcom holds up well from the 80s? Family Ties.
Whenever I see the "top 10 shows of last week" list I have NO IDEA WHO watches all this crap. Two and a Half Men? NCIS? Is this based on what the Oldz are watching? Whenever I see someone on FB mention that Two and a Half Men is one of their favorite shows, it's a sign to not accept their friend request.
