My parents almost always pay. MIL almost never pays (arranged our rehearsal dinner, and then at the restaurant told DH he was paying).
My parents send me with their debit card to the grocery store when we visit to pick up little thing they forgot (chips, soda, butter). I can afford a 2-liter of soda.
His mom picks up the check 50/50 of the time. She likes to take us out because she has extra spending money but we like to insist that it's OUR treat before we leave the house so that she doesn't grab the check at the table. There is 1 of her and 4 of us ya know?
My parents? They ask for separate checks. They have a limited income so it doesn't bother me that they do this.
H and I can barely take ourselves out to dinner. There's no way we could take four people out without seriously changing our budget (and it would have to come from grocery money, which is somewhat tight to begin with).

With my parents (both Mom and StepDad and Dad and StepMom) and the ILs they pick up the check. Occasionally they will let us get pizza or treat for dessert. We will likely do the same barring some kind of major change in our lifestyle.

My IL's always pay. They are very generous though - they make a point to come visit and do work on our house, buy "just because" gifts for the pups, they even recently sent us (unsolicited) money to assist with hospital bills. They get very offended when we refuse so now we just make a point to do as much for them as we can in return. MIL keeps track of how much money she spends on each son and is very serious about making it fair, so when we refuse we screw up her spreadsheet haha
My mom struggles a lot and still has little ones at home. I usually cook for her so we don't have to go out. She will also always pick up the check and refuse our offers to pay but I know she can't really afford it and so I try not to put her in that position.
Always. They are beyond generous to us. After my car accident they bought me a new car. My Mom was so funny. She was like, "It's not fair that you didn't have a car payment before the accident so why should you now?" Uhhhh...because that's life, Mom?
We try not to let my parents or H's parents pay for dinner but they can be crafty. My dad and H got into a staring match over a dinner check once so while they were having it out silently, I just went up and paid. lol
I am not sure who it will go with our kids. I'm sure that we will be adamant that we pay until we are old and crusty.
