I am NOT trying to turn this into a pro life/pro choice shit show and am going to concentrate on work after this, so I'm not going to debate back and forth, but I have to say this:
When society decides that women aren't completely in control of their bodies and that babies should be protected at all costs, THIS is the shit that happens. See, they are just making the best decision FOR you and YOUR HYPOTHETICAL BABY by deciding your reproductive course of action. If a woman was considered to be a whole person, who is both the only person able to make decisions about her body and the only person to worry about when making those decision, this shit would not happen.
But since women need to have everything explained to them, because they may not understand that abortion is terminating a pregnancy and will mean no baby.... of course we would need this explained and potentially decided for us as well, right? This type of shit is the logical end to the pro-life agenda. And this is another reason why it's absolutely wrong.

What a bitch. If she was going to act contrite the least she could have done was apologize. I'm glad your doctor handled things professionally and you feel comfortable with him.
Ok, not the point, but pet peeve.... After like 90 posts of fuck that nurse, I need to point out that she is probably not a nurse. I don't know any OB practices that employ nurses in their offices. So, she was a bitch, but not a nurse

My OB's office had 6 nurses on staff (one per doctor). I agree with you that the person doing the weighing/fingerprick/etc. is probably not a nurse, but one of the reasons I love my practice is that they did have nurses right there.

Really? My OBGYN/ CNMW office employed several LPNs as well as PAs.

OMG ANGRY FAT BULLSHIT RAGE
It reminds me of Joan going to get birth control IN THE 1960's!!! on Mad Men and her doctor telling her he would take her off it if he found out she wasn't having sex in marriage or some bullshit. Get a new OB. Please.
The issue here has nothing to do with your weight. No one can force you to be on birth control. It is solely your decision and a right you hold for your own body.
That nurse was way out of line and I would absolutely tell your doctor about it.
Eta: I'm glad you were happy with the resolution. Your doctor sounds like a good guy.

Huh?
I don't know of any OB practices that do NOT employ nurses.

And I am too blindly raged to read the whole thread yet but it doesn't matter if you are 5 lbs. overweight, morbidly obese, or 800 fucking pounds. Your family planning is none of his goddamn business.

She is a nurse. Or at least an ex-nurse. She used to be in Maternity and was my mom's midwife with my sister. I know this because this island is TEENY TINY!
Ok, lol, then she was a nurse. I hate when all doctors office staff get called nurses, because they tend to give us bad names. Especially the ones who usually answer the phone and talk to you like you are five.

Maybe this is regional? I've definitely seen registered nurses at a variety of obgyn offices.

Um I don't think the doctor was at fault. Sounds like he was pretty supportive. The nurse is the one who did the fat shaming. The nurse should be reprimanded.

I think most people know that receptionists at doctor's offices are not nurses...

I know that now...my blind fatty fatty 2x4 rage made me post before reading the whole thread. He sounds fine. She is a bitch.

I know what kristie is saying. My OB has no nurse, she has something but I don't know what her title is. I don't think she's even a CNA but she does the weighing and temperature taking and everything.
My last practice was bigger and had some nurses, but you typically saw them instead of a doctor for certain appointments rather than before the doctor.
And socratic I'm glad the doctor redeemed the experience a little but I'm sorry you had to go through that. It doesn't have to be that way, my BMI is no bueno but I have no related health issues, and it has NEVER been brought up by a doctor in the context of a conversation about TTC.

Huh? Every doctor at my practice has a nurse, RN to be more precise. Also there a few NPs.
while i gree the nurse was out of line, the sentiment was not. she obv did not express it remotely well and i'm not even sure if she should be the one to talk to you about it. for all of the people saying, 'hell no my doc would NEVER mention my weight', well that's...good? but there are of course risks to pregnancy when one is overweight and IMO, i think it's standard practice to discuss those with the patient, regardless of the severity of the risks. risk is risk. it sucks, and i have been on the receiving end of those discussions, but i wasn't clutching my pearls over it. it is medically relevant.
anyway, it sounds like the doc handled it well and i'm happy you feel better about it. i suspect the nurse/employee will get a talking to, based on your discussion with the doc.
I disagree. The sentiment that she might not be allowed to have her IUD removed is completely out of line. That is complete insanity.
FTR, Its not that she brought up weight at all because yes weight can be medically relevent. The doctor did this properly.
Nursebitchface LIED. LIES LIES LIES. Thats what is pissing me off.
This. I agree weight should be brought up in certain situations but I don't really think this is the thread to discuss that.
The nurse was wrong to address it unless the doctor told her to (which he didn't), she addressed it in a very rude way and she was blatantly wrong in saying that's a reason to not take out an IUD.

I think it's also about who is appropriate to have that conversation. Nobody should be speculating about what the doctor might or might not do, she doesn't know so she should shut up.

I'm confused....how is her family planning none of her OB's business? That's what he's there for. And, consequently, kind of what she was there for since she was having her IUD removed.
Unless you meant to say that it is none of the nurse's business. Then disregard my comment.
The nurse/weight taker/PA/whatever the hell she was, should have never said anything about it to the OP. I think the way the OB handled the conversation was just fine, but the nurse should have never said anything.
I'm sorry socratic. I'm glad you feel good about the way your OB handled it. (((HUGS)))

Maybe not his business is the wrong way to say it. Not his choice, absolutely. He doesn't get to choose if she gets her IUD out and tries to get pregnant. Obviously it was the asshole nurse not the doctor who is the problem. Of course him telling her the risks, etc. is the right thing.
