If you are Middle Eastern and a member of your H's family ( who you interact with a lot) posted on FB (with a caption by them saying how hilarious it was) a picture of a letter to US soldiers written by an 8 year old that contained the following:
" My Dad said you guys are fighting a bunch of goat fuckers. I hope you get them."
I bit my tongue and them thought fuck this shit. I can't believe I'm seeing something like this from H's family AGAIN. I responded.
I would be really upset - especially since your sons are half middle eastern. Are they going to say those sorts of things around them? Is that how they think of you. Id probably say something to H and possibly the family member

Gross. Absolutely pissed off and reactionary is how I would be. Even without me being of the targeted descent. However, the fact they regularly disregard your ethnicity would make me LIVID.
I'd be tempted to respond with "Do you also think that my children and I are goat-f'ers?".
I'd probably really just write "Wow. That's super offensive. Do you really believe that?" Depending on whether and how they respond, I'd decide whether to defriend or just hide their posts.
What a douche, I'm sorry. I defriended an old friend of mine for similar comments - he stood by the racism even when I called him out on it so basically I figured it was through. Luckily, not a family member.

I'm half so they are technically a quarter
Some things have been said around them but they were infants. I've told H (and he agrees) that I will not tolerate it and I will not subject my children to such ignorance. I never remain quiet when it happens.
I held back in my response but posted this:
" It makes me sad that my boys will grow up in a world where comments like this are made about their ethnicity and are then shared for laughs. I don't see anything funny about teaching a child to be derogatory towards people of different cultures."

Yes, I would absolutely have responded. There is no way I could brush something like that off. It shows a total lack of respect for you and your boys, nevermind to other people in general.
H saw it. I texting him telling him asking if he had seen it and that I was in tears. He said he had and was going to respond to it and hoped I didn't see it.
Its not the first time I have responded to either things said in front of me or posted on FB by members of his extended family.
I am thisclose to just telling H that neither the boys or I will be attending functions when certain members are there.

I can't believe someone would stay that about infants! Disgusting

Your comment back was perfectly worded and classy. You handled this way better than I would have. Nobody would blame you for not attending functions that such ignorant people would be at.
It makes me so happy to read all your words of support. Seriously. You guys have made me feel so better. Thank you.
I'm rethinking who I will be visiting next weekend. This person has been crossed off the list. I'll get a pedicure or a drink with TrudyCampbell or any other NYC April probie instead
