I use Treseme shampoo and conditioner and only wash my hair every third day. My hair does not respond to product. If I put anything on it before I try to curl or straighten it, it does not do what it's supposed to. My curls will usually hold for three days if I curl freshly cleaned hair and spray with hairspray after styling. The only hairspray that works for me is John Frieda Frizz-Ease spray.
Like many things, you get what you pay for. Get a good cut for your hair type. Use decent shampoo and conditioner and a good hairdryer. Practice blowing your hair out. To get better at this, watch your stylist and have him/her give you tips. They want your hair to look good after you leave the salon, too! Use quality product, in your case a smoothing serum would be a good tool.
Those that wash only once or twice a week, do you work out? I sweat like a freaking whore in church. How do you combat that? I'd love to try washing my hair less but I workout every day and don't see how I can!
I shampoo every 2-3 days but after I run I will get my hair wet and put a little conditioner in it. I also rub my scalp a lot to help get the sweatiness outz
So you still rinse it but no shampoo?? Hmm.
My problem is then I have to dry it again and that seems to go against why you wouldn't wash every day, right? I'll try this way, though.
my hair has gone from probably a 4/5 (when I was in college and did EVERYTHING wrong) to maybe an 8/9.
what I've changed: - stopped bleaching it. I actually don't dye it at all anymore and have never received more compliments on the color. more importantly, it's so much healthier - trims every 8 weeks at a quality salon - salon quality shampoo/conditioner ONLY. - shampoo/wet my hair 2x/week max. condition only the bottom 1/3 - limit heat application. I give myself a good voluminous blow out after I shampoo and do my best to make that last. (I use a clip at the top of my head overnight to lift the hair off my scalp, which helps with volume, reduces oil, and prevents tangles). I will add extra volume w/o heat by using rollers. - moroccan oil on dry ends on 2nd/3rd day hair but otherwise limit overly relying on products. my hair doesn't look as good when it has product build up and using a stripping shampoo is too harsh.
What kind of clip do you use? I've been trying to do the same and so far every clip I've tried has left a huge indent I've had to flat iron out.

I just let my hair dry overnight so I don't bother with restyling it or anything.

I use those big elastic bands that are all the rage right now and don't tie it too tight. You can also use an old school scrunchie.

I don't have amazing hair but it looks nice and I maintain it well. My standards are regular haircuts and color (I have a ton of gray), good color-safe shampoo (I use Redkin, wait for a sale at Ulta with coupon) and weekly deep conditionings (Aussie 3 Minute Miracle). I either blow dry it upside down (smooth out around ears, part and crown) and straighten it or make big soft curls with a curling iron. I always use Redkin heat protecting spray. I wash it every other day.
It really is trial and error to see what works for you and holds how you like it. If you haven't yet, I'd start with a good stylist.

I did my bedtime hair early tonight for you lol. I use these $3 clips from Sally's.
I make a big jersey shore poof in the front and clip so the tension is in the sides (hair that is covered by other hair when it's down). The poof is awesome for keeping volume in my roots, partially because it prevents scalp oils from transferring to my hair. Today is day 3 hair so I also prepped with preventative dry shampoo. Then for the back I twist it and clip under the twist so the length will be smooth in the morning.
The more products I use, the better my hair looks.
I got complimented on my hair last night. I shampooed, conditioned, spray detangler, mousse on my roots, blow dry, flat ironed, hair spray, and then root lift at the top. It took me about 90 minutes including washing and drying time.
I only wash my hair every 3-4 days, and the more product I put in day 1, the better it lasts over several days.
This is the way I do it too---I always use mousse on my roots because it helps lift hair away from the scalp and keeps it cleaner. After towel-drying, I use mousse, hair primer spray (living proof brand) and a blow out cream (I have several I alternate).
I wash my hair twice a week and use dry shampoo in between and my styles always last when I spend the time to blow it out on the day I wash it.
