Not really. I did cut off 4-5 inches when DS was a baby, but I keep it around collarbone length so I can easily pull it back into a ponytail. Short hair would require a lot more styling and effort for me; medium length hair I can mostly ignore.
No, I have a round face and thick wavy hair. It's more difficult to deal with the shorter it is tbh. The weight helps it lay better. I had a bob once, and it was cute, but soooo much work.

No I don't really like short hair and I do think longer is pretty and more youthful. Plus I know short hair is more work and I can go awhile between cuts.
No. I have A LOT of hair. It is extremely thick and never experienced any hair loss during pregnancy or post-partum. My thick hair would look horrible short and being able to throw it up in a messy bun or pony tail is a must for me.

No; I haven't even had it trimmed since DD was born. I do, however, keep it in a ponytail at all times so she can't grab it.
Between the hair grabs and pp hair loss, I have fantasies about shaving it all off (and thanks to previous chemo, I already know I have a good bald head ), but I know H would NOT be happy (not to mention growing it back out from bald is not fun!)
I did, but not because I was a mom. I wanted to get my hair cut into a pixie before my husband and I got engaged. His best friend does my hair and wouldn't cut it short because she knew he was going to propose and didn't want me regret the timing if I should want long hair for my wedding. Then, I got pregnant soon after our wedding, so I just left it long until after I had him and lost the baby weight.
I've always wanted to donate my hair so will be doing it soon. But it's not just because I'm having babies. I have an appt in a couple weeks when I'm 32 weeks and I want a long bob so if it isn't long enough to donate and still have that length I'll wait till on ML.
My hair does not look good in a bob. I had a pixie cut throughout college and I would consider doing that again except that 1) it was a bitch to grow out, and 2) I think it would make me look older and that no longer has the same benefit as it did when I was in my late teens/early 20s
I usually don't wear my hair in a ponytail, but I did pretty much every day of maternity leave; it was too much effort to brush my teeth some days, much less style my hair.

No, but I have a ton of hair, so when half of it fell out around 4 months it actually looked like a normal persons hair. I cleaned it up (grew a ton while PG) and added layers back in, but didn't do a drastic change. It is right about bra strap length, straight and no longer colored (well the last color I did was my natural on top to blend down into an ombre, so the color grew out great). My hair actually requires more work while short (I have to straighten or blow dry since I wash it at night), I just don't have time for that!
I did. I went for a heavily-layered longish bob. Being able to ponytail was non-negotiable for me…. in fact I think I told the stylist my only two criteria were that (1) it would look okay without being blow-dried and (2) able to pull into a ponytail.
Before and after. I miss my long hair but it's great to have it (mostly) out of DD's reach and I love that I haven't touched a blowdryer in months.
These are pretty much my criteria!
I think after I had K, before I went back to work I did cut it, but I kept it shoulder length. I cut it once a year roughly, it gets long!!! In fact I think I an due for a haircut...
I left it long during ml because I preferred to tie it back, but I cut it to just above my shoulders when I was back at work.
Lol, stealth mom, I think you need to calm down. There are short hair styles that are stylish, of course, but there's also "I'm cutting off all my hair because as a mom, I don't care about being cool anymore". Like how there are jeans, and there are Mom Jeans.
I don't know what I said to make you think I'm excited about this but I'm not. I'm just curious.
I like the mom jeans analogy. So if there are stylish jeans and mom jeans and there are stylish short cuts and there are mom cuts why is everyone choosing a mom cut? Why is the question framed as long vs. Mom cut? Kwim? You never hear people say "did you go buy mom jeans after kids?"
But I think moxie was right. Our culture, and men in particular do fetishize long hair.
Inadvertenly, yes. I brought pictures in to my stylist and she chopped it about 2-3 inches shorter than what I was going for. It was down to my bra strap and meant to have it cut to my shoulders and she went to more like an inch or two above the collarbone. Thankfully my hair grows pretty quickly. I've been keeping it a few inches past my shoulders. Longer hair for me is a lot less work. You can pony tail it, you don't have to wash/straighten it daily, I don't look like a poodle if I wear it curly (there are people who can pull off curly short hair and I am not one of them!).

I'm with you. I'd type a longer response, but I have to run to a hair appointment, because my hair is getting dangerously close to my shoulders and I need to "mom chop" it again. (But seriously, that is what I'm about to do...)

No. My hair is longer than it ever has been in my life. I wanted to grow it longer to cut it for cancer wigs but I have highlighted hair so they won't take it. No idea what I will do now…but I won't cut it yet.

the "mom chop" is a cliche for a reason... lots of women cut their hair short(er) after having a baby. some find it easier to style, some are trying to make the most of pp hair loss, some are annoyed at a baby constantly grabbing at their long hair. it's not meant to be an offensive term nor does it automatically mean a frumpy style.

First, I have nothing against short hair. I had short hair myself for a while in university, and of course there are nice, stylish short hair styles. catbus is adorable, for example.
But when I posted, you had already quoted 3x asking, in what seemed like a really confused way, about why short hair is always awful and unstylish and mommish. The thing is, a lot of moms in my mom's generation had long hair as teens / younger adults but cut their hair when they had kids. I guess because it seemed lower maintenance. And then it became a Thing You Do when you have kids. Hence the term, mom chop. Obviously lots of women have short hair at other times in their lives, but if you cut your hair after having a kid because it's easier to style, or because of pp hair loss, etc, then technically it is a mom chop. So if you're asking whether people cut their hair much shorter as a result of being a mom, then yeah, I don't think it's wrong to call it a mom cut. It would be a different post if it was just "who has ever had short hair" or "who currently has short hair", you see?
I think there are lots of people who wear mom jeans. Hands up everyone who has the high rise ae jeggings because they hold in the flabby pp stomach? Lol.
no I asked why they're understood to be frumpy. *I* know short hair can be stylish but the way some were talking it seemed like they primarily thought of short cuts as frumpy (even aside from the term mom chop) and I was curious as to why that was.
I think I might go back to a cut like this (me at 37 weeks pregnant):
so cute! And not frumpy. Imagine that!
I wasn't thinking frumpy when I saw "mom chop." I was thinking, if I were not about to have another baby, would I otherwise have cut my hair? The only times I have had short hair in the last 10 years or so have been when I had a child under the age of 2 at home. This doesn't mean I assume that everyone who has short hair is a mom or is frumpy.
I get defensive when people ask me if I cut my hair because I had a baby. I didn't, but I still get offended by the question. It's weird. I guess the fact that people ask me, makes me feel that they don't like my hair short, and are really asking "did you give up because you had a child?". At least that's how I feel when someone asks me that question.
I actually wanted to stop being able to ponytail my hair. I wore it in a ponytail/bun every single day after having a baby and I thought that look was horrible. So having my hair short forced me to fix it before walking out the door. When I go to fix my hair, I also tend to put on make-up. So, it's a win-win. I'll go even further, if I put on make-up, then I feel odd wearing yoga pants and a t-shirt. So, I get dressed too. Win-win-win!

Yes, that's how I read some replies, also. A few had a tone of, "No, I'm much more stylish than that!"
