That's not the Parliame nt, it's a modern white building; on phone so I can't get photo easily. Looks like one of the squares in New Town, if it is Edinburgh?
So torn, just don't know what the right answer is. Would love to be back over there right now...

The Queen made a semi-official remark (she allowed the press to record her talking to the public on a walkabout), which is unusual for her - how the Scots need to "think very carefully."

Oh I'm sure that will help. Do I need to add a sarcasm emoji? I wouldn't want to confuse anyone lol

in her defense she is contitutionally prohibited from interfering in politics so that is about the most she could say.

Oh, I know it doesn't influence anything, but I'm surprised she made any kind of statement at all.

the part that i don't get about Scottish independence is that they want to retain the pound as their currency and QE2 as their monarch (i realize that Canada and Australia also recognize QE2 as their Sovereign even though they are for all intents and purposes independent of the UK)
it should be interesting to see how all of this plays out since the UK stores their nuclear weapons in Scotland .. and well the Scottish aren't so crazy about having them there.
don't get me wrong, i'm all for Scotch independence, hell if us colonies could break from England, anyone can
I really think it'll be close but end up not happening now. My prediction is it will narrowly be defeated the parliament will spend the next several years making preparations for independence and sometime after Charles is King do another referendum at which point it'll pass but Scotland will be in a much better place to transition. I think the level of support caught everyone by surprise.

I really hope so. My friends are all vehemently no. They understand where the desire to vote yes comes from, but in the end it is better for Scotland to not separate.

H is worried that a vote for independence will give Barcelona/Catalunaseparatists more wind in their sail, even though the situations are so very different.

Won't happen regarding the pound. If they separate, they will have about a year to either join the EU & take on the Euro or they will have to get another currency. They can't pull out of the UK and expect to still have all the "perks".

I've been reading comparisons of this and the 1995 Quebec independence referendum which was narrowly defeated and I think the vote went 50.6-49.4 (so yeah, reallllly close), and it appears the key difference that could make Scotland's referendum swing the other way is that they actually worded the question clearly lol.
And apparently Scottish nationalists and Quebec nationalists have been working together for the last 20 years to learn from each other. So a Yes vote will have repercussions for Canada although the Québécois party that supports independence lost miserably during their last elections. So, hmmmm. Look, I just wanna be able to keep visiting Montreal easily.

Also, look for Spain to give an independent Scotland an incredibly hard time in joining the EU. Hell, I'm curious to see if they'll even recognize Scotland's independence.
And maybe Belgium will finally fall apart. Not "finally" in that I wanted it to separate, just that I'm amazed that country lasted this long.
Can you tell I'm so dang curious about the global consequences of all this? Even if it's defeated, we will see more referendums (plural sp?) elsewhere.
If FL went to the UK, I'd better move to FL. I've always wondered how the US would be different if we had stayed longer and/or left peacefully; it worked out decently for Canada and Australia.

what's the thought process behind Spain making it difficult for an independent Scotland to join the EU?

Spain has some, er, issues with several groups of its people wanting independence. They are reluctant to recognize newly-independent countries as a result since Catalonians, etc. will argue about why Madrid recognizes new X country but won't let Catalonia secede without a big fight. And since Spain has decent clout within the EU, they'll want to make it tough for new countries to join.
